Code for Workers
Salem - OD - Farmers and
farm workers who are watch
ing developments of the var
ious programs on migratory
labor passed by the 1959
Legislature will have to wait
until early 1960 to get full de
tails. This was revealed by the
governor's interagency com
mittee on migratory labor
which met here Tuesday. Ag
riculture Director Frank Mc
Kennon is chairman of the
committee.
Vera L. Hill, head of the
state motor vehicle depart
ment, said work is moving
along on drawing up a trans
portation safety code.
He said that in the mean
time, ' the requirement that
contract haulers must have
liability insurance to obtain
a vehicle license is being en
forced. ,
Can Protect Selves
William A. Callahan, of the
State Industrial Accident com
mission, said farmers who
have any question on their
liability with respect to safety
code coverage can protect
themselves by voluntary cov
erage of their workers under
the state's workmen's com
pensation law.
A final hearing oh the li
censing of farm labor con
tractors has been set for Aug.
20 and unless there are sub
stantial objections, the code
will become effective Sept. 1.

Production of "sneaky" tor
pedo motors is the challenge
that will be met here under
a contract awarded by the
Navy to the Westinghouse
Electric Corporation's ord

the power of a small imported
car's engine, and must "be as

bor health code will be held
after this year's harvest and
won't be effective until the
spring work next year.
The sanitation law will be
mostly concerned with toilet
facilities.
The committee meets next

Cars Bought Piece by
Piece at Rome Market
By WILLIAM SUNDERLAND
United Press International
Rome (UPD-Want a car cheap?
If you've got the time, a little
money and don't ask silly
questions, you can bipr it
piece by piece-in Rome's fab
ulous Flea Market.
The Flea Market takes over
the Porta Portese every Sun
day morning. Some 500 stalls
are set up on the road running
along the Tiber river.
A haven for tourists and
Italians alike, the market of
fers anything from American
made blue jeans to an old
wedding dress; from genuine
(maybe) silver candalabra to
a chair with only three legs.
Piece by Piece
And you really can buy
that car, provided you want
to go on a number of Sundays,
buy it piece by piec and carry
the parts home to put togeth
er, and not ask just where the
man . selling the parts got
them.
Qver the years a number of
persons have bought for a few
dollars antiques that turned
out to be worth many thou
sands. But in this day and
age the inexperienced buyer
is taking a chance.
That lovely Etruscan vase
that lay buried for a few
thousand years that you man
aged to buy for $15 may be
two weeks old and worth half
the price.
Actually, the expert antique
dealers of Rome comb the
Porta Portese as soon as it
opens early Sunday morning
buying any valuable goods
that may come to light among
the stacks and stacks of junk.
Swarm Streets
Every Sunday thousands
upon thousands of ..persons
swarm the street, picking and
choosing, looking or haggling.
Only the very, very uninitiat
ed pays the original price ask
ed by the stall-keeper. He says
10,000 lire, the buyer . says
five. Usually the compromise
is reached somewhere in be
tween, possibly in favdr of
the buyer if he or she knows
the proper moment to say
"that's too much" and walk
away.
Travelling musicians and
beer and cold drink vendors
mix with the beggars and
pickpockets along the mile
long route.
But whether the intention is
to buy or not, the Flea Mar
ket of Rome is a worthwhile
stop, for any visitor to the
Eternal City.

A. S. Parkes and Audrey U.

be advantages to carrying at
least some of the crew in a

they would be largely immune

would not grow older with,
