California Democratic Party Rocked
By Intramural Struggle Over Tickets
Los Angeles (UPD The Cal
ifornia Democratic Party, rid
ing on a big popularity wave,
was rocked today by an intra
mural struggle over tickets to
the national convention here
in 1960.
There were North - South
overtones within the state to
the bushwhacking by two fac
tions, but the tentacles of the
squabble also reached to Dem
ocratic Party headquarters in
Washington.
A check of Democratic
leaders produced the con
sensus that Los Angeles would
not lose the convention but it
was conceded there may be
feelings hurt before the dis
pute is resolved,

On the one hand in the
Southland there was Edwin
W. Pauley, -finance chairman
of the host committee, who
has insisted that the national
committee, headed by Paul
Butler, promised the host com

Gruening Wants
49-Slar Flag
Washington - (UPD - Sen. Er
nest Gruening (D-Alaska)
learned with , controlled indig
nation yesterday that the
American flag displayed in
the Senate chamber carries
only 48 stars and has not
been replaced.
Gruening told the Senate
he wanted to see a flag car
rying Alaska s 49th star
mounted behind the presiding
officer's chair pretty prompt-ly-and
would pay for it him
self if the Senate could not
afford it. A new flag would
cost $175.
"I respect economy but I
must register my dissent,"
Gruening declared. "Alaska
is entitled to display of the
49-star flag. It is true that
Hawaii held elections yester
day, but a 50-star flag would
not become official until July
4, 1960-almost a year away."

Dies in Pacific
Imperial Beach, Calif.-rtJPD-A
Mormon missionary return
ing home from 21-year mis
sion in Mexico died Tuesday
when he paused here to swim
in the Pacific.
Robert M. Cowley, 25, Mis

guards pulled him ashore
when he slipped under the
water briefly. Deputy Coroner
O. M. Ladd said Cowley prob
ably succumbed to some nat
ural cause. He was believed
under the water too brief a

topsy was ordered.
Cowley was accompanied
by his parents, Mr. and Mrs.

degree murder charges.
Deputy District Attorney
Fred N. Whichello said Miss
Tregoff s testimony included
glaring cont-adictions of her
earlier statements to police
and testimony by the maid,
Marie Ann Lidholm, 19, of
Sweden.
.Miss Tregoff testified that
on July IS, the day Mrs. Bar
bara Finch, 33, was shot to
death, she proposed Finch and
she go to see his estranged
wife to talk about settling
their pending divorce.
Waited for Mrs. Finch
They drove from her Las
Vegas apartment to his $65,-
000 home here and waited for
Mrs. Finch to return home,
Mist Tregoff aid.
"She got out of the car and
bent down," said Miss Tregoff.
"Her back was to me, but then
I noticed she had a gun point
ed toward me. Dr. Finch
reached behind his wife into
the car, threw something at
me which hit me in the stom
ach and yelled at me to get
out of there. The object he
threw was a leather case."
Miss Tregoff . said she left
the struggling , couple and
heard Mrs. Finch scream.
"I heard another sound
from the garage and it sound
ed like Dr. Finch was in trou
ble. I started back in, quite
cautiously. Then I saw Bar
bara on the right side of the
car. She took off down the
driveway.
"She had the gun in her
hand."
Hid Behind Bushes
Miss Tregoff said she then
hid behind some bushes until
about dawn and drove back to
Las Vegas alone, only to find
Finch already there and in
bed.
Whichello pointed out that
her story was much more
elaborate and precise than the
one she told to police after
Finch's arrest July 12 in her
apartment.
Miss Lidholm, who spent
most of the day on the stand,
said she heard Mrs. Finch cry
for help, rushed to the garage
and there found Finch stand
ing over his wife with a gun.
"I was frightened when I
saw Dr. Finch," said Miss Lid
holm, "because when I saw
his eyes he was not himself.
I saw he had a gun in his
right hand. I was scared. I
begged him not to kill me."
She said Finch banged her
head against the wall and
fired a shot at her which went
wild. She last saw him, ' she
said, chasing Mrs. Finch
across the lawn.
care of local party followers
who are pledged to put up
$350,000 for the convention
Pauley took the battle to
Gov. Edmund G. Brown, who
said he may have to appoint
an arbitrator.
In . the midst of the strife
was Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, a
Northerner from Kentfield
and national committeewom
an for the state.
"I have no personal knowl
edge of the basis on which
Mr. Pauley feels he was prom
ised 5,000 tickets. But person
ally I feel 5,000 is excessive.
I'm hoping Mr. Butler will be
able to conclude a contract on
the basis of 1,500 tickets. He
(Butler) told me in April that
was the maximum to which
he would agree. He has re
peated it four or five times to
me since. Fifteen hundred is
really a fair number.
In 1956 at Chicago the
host committee had 1,250
tickets."
San Francisco Still Bidding
In the wings was San Fran
cisco Mayor George Christo
pher, a Republican, who has
resubmitted his no-strings at
tached bid of $350,000 for the
convention but hastens to add,
"we do not want to pirate the
convention in any way to un
dercut Los Angeles."
Los Angeles Mayor Norris
Poulson said. "I have said re
peatedly that this problem
will be solved. This is no time
to get panicked by outside in
terference. Los Angeles with
the new sports arena and our
other great facilities is a nat
ural. The Democrats will have
their biggest convention here

connection with contempt of
court proceedings against
three top officials of the Iron

Mason said he received the
threat in an anonymous letter

findings he should make in
the proceedings before him.
Three members of the un
ion were alleged to be in con
tempt for failing to obey an
order issued by the judge last
month. The order, which was
ignored, was an injunction di
recting the union to instruct
its members to return to work
