PUC Authorizes
Stock Splitting
Salem- (UPD -Public Utility
Commissioner Jonel C. Hill
said he has approved an ap
plication of Pacific Telephone
and Telegraph company to
split its common shares on a
seven-for-one basis.
No proceeds will be realiz
ed for the stock conversion,
nor will there be underwrit
ing fees or commission paid
in connection with the trans
action. The utility, which operates
in Oregon, Washington, Cali
fornia and parts of Idaho,
filed the application June 24.
The company said, splitting
of the stock will result in a
"broadening of public inter

The Medical
Cannot Cure Man Against Will
I get so many sad letters
from women who tell me of
a husband or brother who is
obviously psy

haps is going
insane-, or a
man who is
drinking a
great deal too
much, or a

woman wants to know if she
can slip any medicine into his
food or drink which might
cure him. Sadly, I have to
say I know of none.
One cannot cure people
against their will. It is hard
enough to help theni a little
when they come begging for
help, and admitting that they
very much need it. As I have
said many a time in this col
umn, even the Alcoholics
Anonymous group, with their
big heart, won't bother with
a man if he is dragged in by
his wife, and if then he says,
"I can take it or leave it," or
I m not an alcoholic," or
"When I want to quit I'll
quit," or "The stuff isn't do
ing me any harm."
How is a psychiatrist to
cure a mentally unbalanced
man if he maintains that he
is perfectly sane, and it is
his sweet wife who is the devil
in the home?
I feel that it is not a doc
tor's business to tell a woman
she should get a divorce or

Martha G. My friend Sue
and I are both in our early
20's. We go out a lot on
double dates and have had
some very good times.
I think that Sue has gone
out with very nice men, but
she tells me they are all the
same no good. She says when
they are alone they all only
want to talk of sex. This, of
course, is just the build-up to
overtures.
I personally don't have that
problem and frankly I'm be
ginning to worry. Do I lack
sex appeal?
Sue M. Martha's just being
funny. She knows she's attrac
tive and has always been
popular.
But seriously, I don't know
why it is that I run into this
this problem all the time and
Martha doesn't She says she
steers the conversation away
from sex. I have tried to do
the same, but it never seems
to work.
, The strange part of it is that
I have always been very pro
per in my conduct. I don't
smoke, drink or indulge in
heavy petting. I don't know
why they talk to me like that.
The Council: It takes two to
make a conversation. This is
always the case even when
one of the two is simply a
listener.
Sue must, therefore, con
sider herself equally respon
sible with her men friends for
creating the sex talk.
It is true that the man is
more likely to take the initia
tive in such conversations, but
that doesn't mean the girl
must go along with it.
This talk is no tribute to
any girl's sex appeal, but it
may be a comment on her abil
ities as a companion and
conversationalist.
When conversation lags or
is dull many men feel called
upon to Mir up a little inter

party it gathers momentum,
usually winding up beyond
the area of mere words.

separation, but many a time,
I think that a woman who
is constantly suffering indig
nities and cruelties and per
haps even physical violence,
would do well to leave a psy
chotic or alcoholic man before
her nerves crack completely.
Family Counselors
Many wise family counsel
ors say that it is well that
a home be broken when the
children are becoming neu
rotic because of the distress
they are suffering every day.
Perhaps a sensitive boy is
being terribly upset seeing
his father abusing his mother,
either physically or mentally.
I can quite understand it
when I read every few days
that some boy has taken a
gun and killed his brutal
father while he was beating
the mother.
Sometimes the poor wife
of a psychotic devil of a man
has a terrible time leaving
him 'because he threatens to
kill her if she leaves, and
he is quite capable of carry-
ing out his threat. The worst
of it is that usually Society
has no method of handling
him in such a way that the
wife and children will be safe.
Actually, in many of these
cases, the man ought to be
confined in one of the island
colonies which I have been
asking for. There, he would
be given facilities for earning
enough money to support him
and his family. But he would
not be alowed to go back to
his home to beat up his wife
and children.
counselors.
If Sue doesn't want this
kind of situation she must take
steps to steer her relationships
in an entirely different direc
tion. 1
Sue states her qualities
from a negative point of view.
She doesn't smoke, drink or
pet. That's nice, but what
does she do? Does she dance,
play a musical instrument
sing, read, cook, play tennis
or bowl. Does she have wide
interests and many friends?
Does she get fun out of life in
a variety of ways?
Many skills and many in
terests will help Sue develop
a well-rounded personality.
And when this happens she'll
find that her problem will
disappear. She'll be a good
talker and a good listener. Her
eyes will light up when more
than one subject is touched
on.
