Faces Trial for
High Treason
Havana -(CPD- High army
sources said today Rafael del
Pino, Cuban-born American
from Miami who was wound
ed and captured by police
here Saturday, faces trial for
high treason a crime pun
ishable by death.
Hospital reports said Del
Pino, who is being treated for
severe burns and a bullet
wound in the neck, is in "im
proved' condition. He proba
bly will be transferred soon
from the police hospital to the
infirmary of the Cabana Fort
ress prison.
Del Pino, a one-time rebel
who changed sides, was shot
Saturday while trying to take
a Cessna light plane off a
highway near Havana, ' The
plane, in which Cuban author
ities charged he planned to
fly foes of Premier Fidel Cas
tro out. of Cuba, caught fire
and he was burned in the
blaze.
Castro visited Del Pino in
the hospital Monday and ques
tioned him for an hour about
his activities.
May Go to Conference
The premier told a news
conference Monday that he
may go to next months foreign
ministers' conference in Chile
to charge that Nicaragua and
the Dominican Republic are
to blame for the Caribbean
crisis.
- Castro charged that the two
countries are "governed by
dictators." Other factors con
tributing to tension in the Ca
ribbean, he said, include "hun
ger, economics and freedom."
The premier ridiculed the
U.S. Congress for being con
cerned about Cuban policies,
saying that Cuba does not in
vestigate U.S. generals, ad
mirals or FBI agents. This
was a reference to recent U.S.
Senate hearings on reports of
Communist infiltration of
Monday Night Starts
TV Off With Bang;
Reviewer Elaborates

night starts the TV week off
with a bang.
Bang-bang go the guns of
the Texan, Restless Gun, Tales
of Wells Fargo, Frontier Jus
tice and Peter Gunn. It's a
great night for the lawmen.
Can't say as much for the
viever, though.
Peter Gunn, or repeater
Gunn, as this NBC-TV series
can be called during summer
episodes, is perhaps the most-
copied private eye show on
TV and my hope is that no
body takes it seriously.
Gunn's specialty is playing it
cool. Example:
Monday night, Gunn, play
ed by Craig Stevens, the poor
man's Cary Grant, comes
across a luscious gal, played
by Lucy Marlow, in his con
vertible at 5 ajn. Lucy says:
"Kiss me." Gunn says: "I
don't know your name." Now,
that's being cool. And, like
Markham and Richard Dia
mond, I've seen Gunn let a
little thing like a telephone
call break up a cozy necking
party in his, or her, apart
ment. That's cool, too.
Cool Dialogue
Dialogue is so cool it makes
Jack Webb sound like Alexan
der King. Example:
In turning down a shady
deal Monday night, Gunn
says, "It's no go." Lucy asks,
"definitely?" and Gunn re
plies, "quite." Neat. TJiis
suave, diplomatic veneer is
maintained even during some
of the messiest, most sadistic
sluggings on TV. Gunn smiles
only at puppy dogs. The code
of the cool, I suppose, permits
you to smile at animals and
prohibits a display of emotion
before another human being.
That, to me, is the rub.
Cuba.
Castro said his American
foes are the same people who
opposed the late; President
Roosevelt "people who are
against reform of all kinds.'
Gunn represents a concept of
man that refuses to get excit
ed ' about anything, represses
normal feelings, and looks up
on human life as cheap.
Frankly, the cool approach
gets me hot under the collar.
I pray that nobody viewing
this show tries to emulate
Gunn in real life.

Rescuers Search

Rescuers pressed the search to
day for a boy from Georgia
missing in a desolate gorge of
the Grand Conyon, but they
had little hope of finding him
alive.
The bodies of the boy's hik
ing companions, another boy
and a Roman Catholic Priest,
were found Monday...
A note scrawled in the sand
near the bodies reaa: "neip.
One may be dead. Fall of 100
feet upper ravine."
Walter J. Mahany, 16, and
the Rev. Eugene A. Gavigan,,
30, . assistant pastor of St.
James ' Cathedral, Savannah,
Ga., apparently were victims
of exposure and the scorching
heat of the mile-deep canyon.
They entered the canyon Fri
day.
Still missing was Manson
Owens, 16, son of John M.
Owens Sr., Savannah, a South
ern Bell Telephone company
supervisor.
Relatives of the boys in Sa
vannah said the trip with Fa
ther Gavigan had been
planned for months, with the

An examination for mari
time safety promotion speciali-
ist has been announced by the
U. S. civil service commission
for filling positions in the bu
reau of labor standards of the
U. S. department of labor.
The positions to be filled are
located in major port cities
throughout the country. To
qualify, applicants must have
had experience in positions
which provided a knowledge
of maritime operations and re
lated hazards as they pertain
to the stevedoring or ship re
pair industries.

On ICBM Discussed

Boeing part of the Minuteman
ICBM research and develop
ment program was discussed
here Monday at a bidders'
conference attended by repre
sentatives of 21 companies.
Discussion centered on re
quirements for transporters
for hauling the missiles to
launching sites. Each vehicle
would be equipped with a de
vice for lowering a Minute
man into an underground
shelter.
- Also discussed was sub-contract
work on containers and
carriages for delivering min
uteman first stage engines.
Selection and announce
ment of the subcontractors
will be made in mid-September,
pending evaluation of
proposals submitted in the
near future. No cost estimates
have been announced.
