are interested in a cold-turkey
and mass scale test which
they feel will show why many
people are so devoted to ciga
rets they can't stop smoking
them.
These people, in the scien
tific view, are addicted and
the questions is whether the
addiction is mainly psycholog
icalis nicotine a habit-forming
drug when broken down
by fire into smoke, or are
these people addicted to ciga
rets because smoking them is
an outlet for inner tensions?
Scientists believe a lot of
light will be thrown on this
question in the fall when ciga
ret smokers from coast to
coast are offered a cigaret
which contains absolutely no
nicotine for the convincing
reason that it contains no to
bacco. That's mass scale and
its large enough to mean
something.
Seal Sales Pitch
The cold turkey angle is
this: These tobacco-less ciga
rets are going to be sold on a
"scare" basis. Cigaret smokers
will be reminded of the wide
ly held scientific opinion that
there is a connection between
tobacco cigaret smoking and
will be made that tobacco
cigarets are harmful but tobacco-less
cigarets are harm
less. Will cigaret smokers switch
from tobacco to non-tobacco
in appreciable numbers? If
cigaret smoking is mainly a
psychological att a c h m e n t,
they should have no particu
lar difficulty in switching
when given such a powerful
"motivation" to use a term of
psychologists.
But if the smoke formed by
burning nicotine is habit
forming, cigaret smokers-es-pecially
veteran smokers-will
draw no satisfaction from a
tobacco-less fire and they'll
find switching more or less
impossible. It will all be told
by the sales figures for the
tobacco-less cigaret in the
months following its nation
wide introduction.
It's trade name is "Van
guard." Instead of tobacco, it
contains a blend of "vegetable
fibers." The manufacturer is
the Bantob "Ban Tobacco"
Products Corp. The identity of
the fibers is a corporate se

Gerald M. Schaflander, for
mer executive in the Kaiser
Industries, and a former ac
count executive for a well
known tobacco cigaret in an
advertising agency. His spe
cialty is sales promotion.
The company has had a
number of scientific tests
made of its secret vegetable
fibers to show that they con
tain no arsenic (you can find
traces of arsenic in most to
baccos) that they contain no
nicotine, and they contain no
"tobacco tars."
However, the "vegetable
fibers" have not been tested
except under Bantob auspices.
Anything that is burned pro
duces "tars" and other "com
bustion products" and these
are cancer-causing suspects as
regards tobacco cigarets, rath
er than arsenic or uncombust
ed nicotine.
Lake Erie and Lake Ontario
are almost exactly divided in
half by the , border between
the U. S. and Canada, about
one-half of each lake lying
equally in the two countries.

Promising Young

to Moorhead Wright, operat
ing manager of the General
Electric Management Insti
tute. Wright said "experience
shows how wrong these arbi
trary 'crown prince' theories
can be. You just can't pick a
few bright young men and
ignore the rest."
He cited the experience of
one company which dug up its
"promising young men" list of
10 years ago. There were 143
names on it but only 37 per
cent of them had obtained the
success predicted for them.
"There can be no dividing
lines between 'promising
young men who will be de
v e 1 o p e d and "unpromising
young men' who should be
ignored," Wright said. "Op
portunity must be available
for everyone who is motivat
ed to accept it and to work
for it."
Women Charged With

women who face trial on
charges of keeping in their
home 147 more cats than the
legal limit of three pleaded
today for "sympathetic under
standing" from their annoyed
neighbors.
"What will happen to our
family, asked Aura Hardison.
"We do not breed our cats,
merely provide a home for
the homeless."
But in court Monday when
the women were arraigned,
Richard L. Vernon, who lives
two houses away, said:
"I know this is America
and the women have certain
liberties, but this has gone
beyond reason. Everyone has
a right to a hobby but this
defies convention."
And Bob Meyer, another
neighbor, . said he attends
Glendale College and finds
studying hard going.
"It's difficult to concen
trate on studies on a hot night
as my bedroom is 10 feet
from the cat compound," he
said. "And if the cats fight,
they always wait until 1:30
a.m."
