No. 15 For
Edmunds In
NW League
By United Press International
It looks very much as if Ted
Edmunds of Tri-City, the
Northwest League's winning-
est pitcher, will crack the 20-
game win column this season.
. ' Edmunds had his troubles
Wednesday ! night but when
the smoke had-Cleared he had
posted victory No." 15, a 7-6
win over Salem.
I Tri-City got four unearned
runs in the first frame and
went on to pick up the win al
though Edmunds was touched
for 11 hits. However, he man
aged to blank the Senators in
the ninth for the victory.
Solo Homer

his sixth in a row with a 4-1
decision over Wenatchee. Bo
lin spaced eight hits, fanned
II and walked 3 in posting his

Migrating Birds
Can't Be Baited
If you feed 'em, you can't
shoot 'em. -, v
That's the gist of Federal
regulations prohibiting the
taking of migratory water
fowl with the aid of feed
or bait as explained today
by a Department of the Interi
or official at Portland.
iLeo L. Laythe, regional di
rector of the Bureau of Sport
Fisheries and Wildlife of the
U.S. Fish and wildlife serv
ice, said there ' is nothing in
the Federal anti-baiting regu
lations that prohibits the feed
ing of migratory waterfowl.
"The regulation deals with
shooting in conjunction with
feeding; if such feed is put
out, regardless of where or
when placed and it becomes
a means by which the hunter
attracts migratory waterfowl
. to the gun, such shooting
would be 'unlawful,'.' Laythe
said. -
The regional director warn
ed that the responsibility for
violation of the Federal regu
lations is placed directly on
the hunter regardless of
whether he is the one to place
the bait.

After losing to Brian Lon

don during a tour in which
he won four and lost six
fights in England and Italy,
Pastrano finds himself ranked
ninth in Ring . Magazine and
up against a foe who is. riding

Johnson, who gave up bar-
bering for punching, has had
a' busy year. He has had five
fights and has whipped Billy

to a classy 17-1.
Johnson beat Valdes in a

Madison Square Garden and
promptly leaped to the No. 7

ninth in Ring Magazine. .

'There was a rumor awhile

a Dook wnicn eventually

words crept in which they

This one, sans "ghost," con
tains Graziano's own refresh
ing attitude toward people,
places and things.
They made tyvo mistakes
when . they paid Rocky to
write a magazine story called
"for $50,000 I'd-fight any of
these bums." First, the sub
title should read "Make Me
Mad Enough and I'll Do It For
Free." Second, they translated
it into English and thus, to be
forceful, it has to be trans
lated back into Grazianoism

Against Vargas
By JAMES DOYLE
Portland, Ore.- (UPD -Eddie
Machen, who said he would
do his talking in the ring,
hoped today that he was elo
quent enough against Rueben
Vargas to earn a shot at the
heavyweight championship.
Im ready to take on In-
gemar Johansson in his own
back yard," Machen said after
blasting Vargas in 1:55 of the
sixth round for a technical
knockout at the Oregon Cen
tennial Exposition grounds
Wednesday night.
Vargas, 195, was sent to
his knees for an eight count
in that round, but he arose
and was plastered against the
ropes at Machen's mercy. The
referee, Ralph Gruman, stop
ping the fight at that point.
Stunned by Haokt
Vargas blamed the TKO on
the lack of a mouthpiece. He
said that in the excitement
between the fifth and sixth

game, with pithy nonchalance,
to wit:
"These guys ain't just dull.
They seem to enjoy bein' dull.
And ya see a guy drip a drop
of blood and right away some
body sez that the other guy
is a killer."
Floyd Patterson, ' the form
er heavyweight champion
who becomes the invisible
man between bouts and did
his most recent training in
the secluded wilds of New
Jersey, gets a straight tip
from the Rock. One thing
about Graziano, between
fights he met more people
than a widow at a seashore
resort.
"Patterson should oughtta
remember," says the Rock,
"that you don't excite people
by hiding away in New
Joisey. People is like me,
When I go to Joisey, I go there
t'play golf."
. Health clubs intrigue Graz
iano, he reveals in next
month's issue of Sports Maga
zine. He even inhabits one,
along with such other star
actors as Ben Gazzara and
Tony Franciosa,
"There's -so many of us
Eyetalians there," he reports,
"you'd tink it ,wuz Mafia
headquarters."
Unexpectedly Modesty ,
Yet an unexpected modesty
appears in the one-time golden
boy of the ring when he dis
cusses and assesses his His
trionic abilities.
"I wouldn't exadtly say I'm
a real distinguished actor like
Victor Mature," he allows,
although I do okay in my
league."
One of his difficulties quite
apparently is in mastering his
lines. .
"I make believe I'm linin'," J
the Rock admits. "But I don't
stick to 'em. After all, I can
always add a few libs and get.
along." : -,
Steve Allen agreed to go
along with Rocky on this
basis, however.
Just act natural," Allen
told him.. "Say what you feej
like. Only, don t curse."
Rocky enjoys comedians
and feels a close kinship with
them.
Half the comedians in the
world used to be' fighters.
That's what they say. Jack E.
Leonard, Bob Hope, Joey
Bishop all ex-fighters," he
analyzes, adding sympatheti
cally, "I guess there were
bums fighting then, too."

rounds his seconds forgot to
put his mouthpiece back in.
He was stunned by a series
of left and right hooks by
Machen.
"But I don't want to blame
it on any one thing because I
got beat," Vargas said. He
said he was "shook up real
hard" in the sixth before he
went to the canvas.
The two heavyweights
fought a close battle through
five rounds with Machen, 197,
Portland, Ore., scoring more
blows but with the Mexican
on the aggressive. Vargas
plodded forward through
most of the bout, stopped only
by Machen's occasional out
bursts of fury.
It was the 28th pro bout
for the fifth-ranked Machen
and his 26th win. He had a
draw with Zora Folley in
1958 and was knocked out in
the first round by Johansson
in Sweden last September. ;
