SPEAKER - Trends in today's
college honors programs will
be discussed by Dr. Joseph W.
Cohen at the Northwest Con
ference on Higher Education
meeting at Southern Oregon
college July 26-28. Cohen is
director of the Inter-Univer
sity committee on the Super
ior Student at the University
of Colorado. He laid the plans
for the first honors program
on the Boulder, Colo., campus
and has served as director of
the program since 1943. Under
a Carnegie grant, Cohen pub
lishes the "Superior Student,"
a monthly newsletter sent to
colleges throughout the na
tion.
Airliner Makes
Emergency Stop
.Tucson, Ariz. - (UPD An
American Airlines Boeing 707
jet-liner, with 94 passengers
and a crew of eight, made an
emergency landing at Muni
cipal Airport here Wednesday
night.
One of the tires in the land
ing gear blew out as the plane
touched down. Otherwise the
landing was uneventful.
A half dozen airport and
Air National Guard fire
trucks stood by as the big
plane landed.

hydraulic system about 500
miles east of Tucson. He used

lower the landing gear.
Shipley landed the plane,
on a non-stop New York to
Los Angeles flight, in Tucson
because of the long runway
available here.
A special DC7 was flown to
Tucson early today to pick
up 85 of the passengers and
take them to Los .Angeles.
The others decided to remain
in Tucson overnight.

Wins Firm Honor
. Portland A former Med-
ford resident, Don J. McFad-
den, Portland, this week was
awarded Co nsolidated
Freightways highest honor,
the title of "Freighter of the
Year."
McFadden won the 1959
recognition on the basis of
long service to the company,
popularity among fellow em.
ployees, community activities
in many fields and outstand
ing job accomplishments.
The top Freighter served as
dock foreman at Medford
from 1940 until 1942.
In addition to receiving a
plaque, McFadden was guest
of honor at a special lunch
eon at which he was awarded
five shares of company stock.
Since 1948 he has been em
ployed as sales representative
for CF at Portland.
Discussion Leads
To Polio Shots
Suffield, Ohio - (UPD - The
more than 400 students at
tending this rural communi
ty's public school have all. re
ceived their polio : shots-be-
cause of a history class dis
cussion.
The class was studying how
laws are made when the dis
cussion turned to a bill then
before the Ohio . legislature
which would require polio
immunization for every pub
lic school pupil unless his
parents objected in writing.
A classroom survey showed
that only a third of the stu
dents had received their Salk
shots. The pupils promptly
asked that arrangements be
made for mass- inoculations
with one provision: that- they
pay -for the', vaccine them
selves. It was arranged.

to the crowded Negro district,
which . he described as a
"segregated ghetto." I
