    Porter Praises
Smokey Bear on
Floor of House
Washington -(DPB- Represen
tative Charles O. Porter (D
Ore.) Wednesday praised the
United States -Forest Service
nd its firefighting Smokey
Bear on the floor of the House
of Representatives.
Porter praised the forest
service "for its ingenious pro
motion of Smokey Bear and
ior lis other remarkably well
executed efforts to save the
nation's forests for the profit
ana pleasure of everyone."
Richard . MeCardle. For
est Service Chief, told Porter
that Smokey Bear receives
more than a thousand letters
and postcards daily, mostly
from children. The Forest
Service has set ub a Junior
Forest Range organization for
children which has more than
three million members. .
MeCardle told Porter that
"We believe there i- a direct
correlation between Smokey's
success and the dramatic for
est fire reduction since the
program started in 1953."
Portervsaid the record
shows that in 1941 before the
Cooperative Forest Fire Pre
vention Campaign 210,000 for-
ets ' fires burned 32 million
acres.
According to the Oregon
congressman present figures
indicate that last year less
than 100,000 fires burned
fewer than 4 million acres!
Porter said that these re
eent figures resulted despite
a 600 per cent increase in' use
of the forests.
Senators Have
Plan for Laggards

senators.
Just before the roll is closed,
a senator in the chamber, will
ask innocently whether - he
has voted on the bill. "He
knows he has, the clerk knows
. heh as, and so -does the presid
ing officer. Nevertheless, they
go thorugh the formality of
checking the record to stall
for time for the missing
colleagues. '
If more time is needed, a
senator will even ask how he
voted, as though " he didn't
know. There have been times
when half the senators in the
chamber, so far as the record
shows, didn't know whether
or how they voted.
. When all missing senators

Right To Attend "
Funeral Refused
West Covina, Calif.-UPD-Dr.
Bernard Finch, 41, accused
of killing his socialite wife,
Barbara, has been denied per
mission to attend her funeral
Friday. ,
Finch, part owner of a
medical center, petitioned Su
perior Judge Lewis Drucker
late Wednesday to be allowed
to leave his jail cell to attend
the funeral, but the jurist
turned him down. The Finches
had been estranged. '"
Judge Drucker said he
thought Finch's attendance at
the funeral services would be
"improper under the circum
stances.". .
Police Chief Allen Sill also
revealed Mrs. Finch might
have been beaten before she
was shot. He said an autopsy
disclosed that two head
wounds on the dead woman
each caused minor skull frac
