Vargas, an unranked cam
oaigner with an in-and-out
record, predicted today he
would knock out heavyweight
challenger Eddie Machen in
their scheduled 10-round bout
at the Oregon Centennial
grounds tonight.
"I think I'll stop him with
a right hand," 'say Vargas,
who lost a decision to Machen
in San Francisco in the last
outing for both men.
The battle will be televised
nationally with a 200-mile
blackout in the Portland area.

Green chalked up another

urged the Massachusetts Com

The state commission held a
hearing and Red Sox General
Manager Stanley R. Bucky
Harris said it had never been
the club's policy to deny
chance to a Negro ballplayer,

Sox would call Green up from
the minors if his play war
ranted it and the team needed
him. The Red Sox subsequent
ly were cleared of the dis
crimination charges.

Kansas City Athletics under
goes thorough examination
today to see if he suffered
any damage to his heart.
-The 44-y'ear-old Craft was
taken to Downtown Hospital
Tuesday suffering from over
work, fatigue and a slight
heart flareup.
There were earlier fears of
a coronary attack but late
word fromi the hospital indi
cated Craft was suffering
more from exhaustion than
anything else. He was re
ported in satisfactory condi
tion today and . resting com
fortably. ' Coach Bob Swift
filled in at Craft's manager
ial spot.
"I wouldn't call it a cor
onary or anything serious,"
Dr. D. M. Nigro said. "The
electrocardiogram came back
practically negative', but he
did have a little flare up."
"I think it was mostly due
to overwork and fatigue.".
Dr. Nigro said, however,
that heart specialists, Dr. E.
R. Nigro, his son, and Dr. D.
J. Outcliff, would examine
Craft thoroughly today.
Regardless, the doctor
said Craft will remain in the
hospital at least several "fcays
for observation and rest.
