Cape Canaveral, Fla. -(UPD-An
Army Redstone missile
went through its paces Tues
day night at the missile range
here.
The veteran 250-mile range
Redstone, a pioneer in the
U. S. missile program, rose
from its pad with a roar and
was visible nearly three min
utes as it ascended into the
clear night sky.

reminding its readers that 10
years ago so

mise that free

would be no
more of a bur
den on the eco
nomy of the

But, today, the British have
learned that their Govern
ment cannot reduce sickness
simply by providing free
treatment for people. "And
the people have found that
as taxpayers they are spend
ing a lot more for medical
treatment than they did as
paying patients?' And with all
this, they sadly need hospitals.
"In the past 10 years only
one small new hospital has
been built in all the British
Isles. And the rush of people
for treatment has handicapped
many who need it most . . ..

Grange picnic Sunday, July
19. About 50 Grangers and
friends attended.
During the regular session
of the Grange July 17, the
charter was draped in mem
ory of Robert Hague. The
chaplain, in her report men
tioned several who had had
surgery or were ill.
Delmar Smith, chairman of
the community service com
mittee, reported on plans be
ing made by, the Pomona
Grange for the Jackson coun
ty booth at the State Fair.
Pomona Grange will meet
Saturday, July 25.
Grange insurance agent Ros-
coe Roberts reported on the
Oregon and Washington State
Grange sessions which he at
tended in June. Roberts also
gave a report on the Grange
Insurance association.

bills passed in the last ses
sion of the Legislature, and a
brief report on a recent trip
of the four counties under
the bureau of land manage
ment. Mrs. Charles Jantzer,
HEC chairman, reported on
the last meeting of the Home
Economics club. She asked
Delmar Smith to explain the
lilies, which he had on the
display table. Smith, said he
has about 500 lilies and 400
roses planted in a land-scaping
project at his home near

To keep the total bill for
health down, the Government
has been driven from expedi
ent to expedient. It has raised
the tax. It has vetoed pay in
creases for certain health
service workers, and now it
is charging patients small fees,
But still, the health service
needs more money, and it
heeds it soon. According to
the Economist's report, "the
facts indicate that the British
'free' medicine is not very
good, and that its problems
are growing.
I know that because I Write
this I will get a number of
letters from English people
who will tell me what is true,
that today many very poor
people who formerly could get
no medicine at all, now. get
some medicine, and are very
grateful for it. These people
tell me also what is true, that
quite a few of the specialists
are satisfied with things as
they now are, and the peopl
who are running hospitals are
fairly well 'satisfied with
things as they are. It is the
general practitioner who has
to work rapidly for long hours
to make a living who is any
thing but "happy.

duets. Gregg Graten of Med
ford played a clarinet solo.
Mrs. Floux conducted a quizz,
and Mrs. Arnold Bohnert read
several jokes. John Caster
will be in charge of the -next
Grange program Aug. 7.

pointed chairman to arrange
a suitable entry for the Jack
sonville Jubilee parade for
the Grange.

Mrs. Roy Stanley of Eagle

Lightning Kills
Army Reservist
Ft. Devens, Mass.-flJPD-Light
ning struck an encampment
of Army reservists Monday
night, killing one man and in
juring 17 others, the Army
disclosed today.
The Army said lightning
bolts struck a bivouac area of
about 1,000 Reserve Officers
Training Corps cadets during
a thunderstorm.
The encampment was at
Mirror Lake on this sprawling
Army base.
The lightning killed an en
listed man, Pfc. John William
Allen, 21,. Metamora, Ind.
Of the 17 injuries, two were
hospitalized!
Two Penguins Die
At Portland lop
Portland-DPD-Portland Zoo
officials said Monday that two
more penguins of the penguin
colony 'died of. unknown
causes. The colony has 28 re
maining birds. i
Officials said that aspergil
losis, a lung infection which
killed many penguins en route
to Portland last year, is not
a problem here any longer.
The rest of the birds seem
ed happy in the warm wea
ther which ranged some 150
degrees higher than their na
tive Antarctica.
One American adult out of
