The Medical
A Psychopathic Delinquent
A number of people, nearly
out of their mind with anxiety
over a very wayward son,
write wanting
to know what
can be done
for a psycho
pathic delin
quent. Often it
is a young
man, but it
can be a young
woman.
Tne person
Dr. Alvarez appears" to
have been born without any
moral sense or any desire to
earn a living and settle down
with a wife to build a home
and an honorable position in
the community. He has abso
lutely no consideration for the
rights of others, and he has
no shame. '
Often, early in life, such a
lad will start getting into
trouble with the police. He
many constantly be swindling
people out -of small amounts
of money; he may write bad
checks; or he may steal auto
mobiles just to ride around
town; or he will get into vari
ous types of malicious mis
chief. ' , '
For instance; during the last
war, when people were frantic
to get housing, a young man
a delinquent whUe his fam
ily, was out of town, leased
their home furnished to a
stranger with the proviso that
he pay two months in advance.
With the money he thus ob
tained, the son went on a
glorious binge. When his par
ents came home, one can
imagine their desperate situa
tion with people in the home
who naturally refused to move
out. The ' interesting thing,
about the young man who did
this dirty trick to his parents
was that, like others of his
sort, he f elt no remorse and
no shame.
Behavior Described . ;
There- are two wonderful
books about these people; one
is "The Mask of . Sanity," by
Dr. Hervey Cleckley of Au
gusta, Georgia (Mosby). He de
scribes in a masterly way the
behavior of a number of these
men and women. As he points
out, the police may soon get
tired of arresting a young de
linquent, and sometimes then
the judge will end up refusing
to have anything more to. do
with the lad.
The judge thinks he is in
sane, and tells the parents to
put him in a mental hospital.
But there, within a few days
or weeks, either the superin
tendent sends him home, say
ing he is sane, .or a lawyer
sees to it that he is discharged.
According, to our 150-year-old
legal definition of insanity,
the man is sane because he
has no hallucination or de
lusions, and knows right from
wrong.
Another fine book about
these people is by Dr. G. N.
Thompson, an able psychia
trist of Los Angeles, who for
years was advisor to some of
the courts in regard to these
strange persons.
Dr. Thompson became prac
tically hopeless about, them..
They cannot be rehabilited.
His book is called, "The Psy
choapathic Delinquent and
Crinminal'' (C. C. Thomas). .
The difficulty is that these
persons have nothing good in
them that one can appeal to.

'Emeritus Consultant In Medictna.
Mr.yo Clinic
Emerihu Professor of Medicln.
Mayo Glial
Often they can be very charm
ing. Some are gifted in music,
and many can be very ingrat
iating. Some are clever at
picking up well-to-do friends
who will make "a tremendous
effort to try to rehabilitate
them. But, sooner or later, the
psychopath tires of being re
habilitated. Often he steals all
he can lay his hands on,' and
leaves cursing his benefactor.
So far as I can see, these
people ought all to be put in
the type of colony on an is
land that I have recommend
ed. There they would not be
costing their families millions
of dollars in the aggregate,
and they wouldn't be causing
endless trouble to the police,
to society, and to the people
whom they are constantly
swindling. In the island col
ony, which I propose should
be set . up, they could swindle
each other, which would not
do any harm!
Lupus Erythematosus
People keep asking about
lupus erythematosus. This is a
disease which tends to flare
up every so often. It affects
not only the skin but . many
of the organs throughout the
body, such as the heart, art
eries, and kidneys. The patient
should be under the care of
a good physician. Sometimes,
during the flare-up or "crisis,"
the patient can be tided over
with cortisone-like drugs, or
perhaps Atabrine. .
An Albino
An unhappy mother writes
to say that one ot her chil
dren is an albino," with flaxen
hair, and pink, colorless eyes.
These people are usually
squinting . because the sun
light hurts them- so. They
probably all ought to wear
dark glasses. The mother is
much worried because people
tell her than an Albino is
mentally retarded, but, as she
says, her child certainly is not.
I do not remember . ever
having read anywhere that
albinos tend to be mentally re
tarded. An albino tends to
show up only occasionally in
a family, perhaps because a
"normal" woman with the
lack of a certain gene happen
ed to marry a "normal" man
who, also, lacked the gene for
pigment formation.
