And the disgraceful way young wives
call their mothers when anything goes
wrong at home! Who can blame hubby
when he growls, "Who did you marry,
anyway me or your mother? The an
swer is mama and a telephone.
Telephones should be used to make ap
pointments to chat in person, and not be
an instrument of conversation in them
selves. An American friend called me the
other day to ask me if I had heard the
scandal about so-and-so. I was looking
forward to a personal tete-a-tete with her,
but . she blurted out the news in one
electronic gasp.
I must stop writing now have to call
my friend back and tell her my news.
"Call her?" you ask. Oh yes, I forgot
to mention it, but I, too, have caught, how
do you say it "telephonitis."

they usually give me a strange look
and walk away.
My wife hasn't been in this coun
try as long as most Americans have.
Maybe that's why she appreciates
the United States as much as I do.
Believe me, it's worth fighting for
and working for and even spying
for. But I'm surprised and dismayed
at how many Americans consider
this attitude "corny." Such feelings
are dangerous when they get as
widespread as they are here today.
In spite of repeated warnings,
Americans as a whole are still pretty
simple-minded about the Commu
nists. They think that because the
Party is underground it is inactive.
That attitude is hard to accept when
you see as I did a huge Union
organization with hundreds of thou
sands of members controlled abso
lutely by the Communist Party.
The threat of Communism in the
United States is becoming steadily
more serious because the Commu
nists are working through legitimate
or legitimate-sounding organiza
tions. The American people must
realize that no tactic is out-of-hounds
to the Reds as long as it
achieves their ends. God means
nothing to them, nor does the Ameri
can concept of fair play and justice.
The only immediate answer I can
see to the Communist problem in
America is education of individual
Americans to the nature and danger
of Communism. This plus constant
publicity on Communist operations
can at least serve to make Ameri
cans more alert than they are now.
Communism as a system hasn't a
chance when pitted against our form
of government in an open battle of
ideologies.- But forced underground,
it is eating away at the foundations
of our liberty.
Another question I'm asked re
peatedly is: "Would you do it all
over again?"
Certainly I would! I feel that I
was able to help our Government,
and this was well worth the personal
sacrifice of myself and my family.
I'm certainly not the first American
to do this, nor will I be the last.
Throughout our history, millions of
Americans have risked or given
their lives to preserve individual
freedom throughout the world.
I'm grateful to our Government for
the chance to contribute to this
cause. I only hope the things I dis
covered will serve as a warning to
all Americans and that my family
and I can now enjoy the peace and
contentment we've missed for the
past 16 years.
