strictive" sports bill pushed
by "anti-trust zealots" could
kill hopes for a third major
baseball league, according to
Sen. Kenneth B. Keating (R.
N.Y.). Keating said the same legis
lation could end chances for
the establsihment of one and
terhaps two new clubs in the
New York City area.
Keating made his state
ments almost simultaneously
with an announcement by
Commmissioner Ford Frick
that he has arranged an Aug.
18 meeting at which William
Shea and backers of a pro
nosed third major league will
discuss their problems with a
newly-formed big league com
mittee oik expansion.
Cautions Fans
"Keating told the Senate he
welcomed - hearings on pro
posed new sports legislation,
but he cautioned that the ses
sions beginning July 28. could
nrovide a forum for "sports
baiters." " ..
The hearings will be con
ducted by an anti-monopoly
subcommittee headed by Sen.
Estes Kefauver (D-Tenn.). He
and Keating have introduced
rival snorts bills.
Keating urged support for
his measure, which, he said,
represents a "middle-of-the-road
approach." The measure,
similar to one approved by
the House at the last Con
gress, would exempt most as
pects of professional team
sports from anti-trust prose
cution. 'Sports Have Prospered'
Keating said Kef auver's
proposal would push "the long
arm of Uncle Sam" into pro
fessional football, baseball,
basketball and hockey. It
would, he said, "completely
upset the sound and reason
able free enterprise methods
under which these sports have
prospered."
. The Kefauver bill would
give professional team sports
a limited exemption from
anti - monopoly laws, but
would restrict some of their

Mike Hood of Medford took
four firsts in the 15-16 age
group yesterday in the All
Comers AAU track and field
meet at Medford High school,
setting three records and ty
ing one.
Phil Humphreys of Medford
was a double winner in the
same division and Dan Lum
ley of Phoenix took dual hon
ors in the sprints.
Hood set records in the 120
yard low hurdles (13.9), the
high jump (5' 7") and the
broad jump (216") and tied
the record in the 70 yard high
hurdles (:09.2).
Humphreys set a new rec
ord in the 440 with the good
time of 56 seconds flat and
won the pole vault with a leap
of V 6".
Lumley tied the record in
the 75-yard dash with a time
of :07.9 and took the 225 in
:23.4.
There were 35 contestants
yesterday in the divisions ex
cluding the Open and 17-18
and hockey to "rally around
the flag in their defense."

innings Friday night to defeat
the Spokane Indians 3-2 in a
Pacific Coast league game.
The win gave Portland a 2-0
edge in the series and left
them in third place.
Spokane outhit the Beavers
11-7 and nearly pulled the
game out of the fire in the last
three innings. But Portland
pitcher George Brunet main
tained the slim 3-2 lead to win
his third game against eight
defeats. i
