Police said Viola Hyatt, 30,
led them to" the double-edged,
blood -stained' ax allegedly
used in the killing and also
showed them the wheelbar

ing Thursday night, but her

as "bad drinking" brothers.
Police said the chunky
woman told them she ' alone
killed the Harper brothers in
their small trailer home with

. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Jacoby,
Ashland, will move from the
area Aug. 1, Mrs. Jacoby re
ported today. The family, who
have lived in the valley for
the past three years, will
move to Sandy, Ore.
Mrs. Jacoby is known in
the area for her work in rid
ing clubs for teen-agers. She
is president of the Ashland
Sage Riders and director of
their drill team. The Sage
Riders have carried the mail
through Jackson county dur
ing the Pony Express, runs
this summer.
The Jacoby's daughter, Sha
Ron, is a trick rider and has
performed at many valley ac
tivities with her horse.

in a plane from New York

by some 2,000 cheering, wide

The foreign entrants were
attractively turned out in cos
tumes native to their country
and elicited their due volume
of "ohs" and "ahs" from the
appreciative crowd.
One of the girls will be
joining in the contest despite
the threat of a Catholic Arch
bishop that she and her family
would be denied the sacra
ments of the church if she ap
pears in. public in a bathing

She issued a "statement of
conscious" Thursday night
proclaiming her determina
tion to take part in the seven
day contest officially getting
under way Saturday night.

in the contest in a swim suit).

boat out of Coos Bay, found
ered and sank 20 miles south
west of Newport early today,
possibly the victim, the Coast
Guard said, of a brush with a
whale.

Radioed for Help

that the boat was taking on
water fast. Jensen said the
Donna B, drifting while ap
proaching a tuna bank, was
struck about 12:25 p.m. Thurs
day about 70 miles southwest
of Newport. Jensen said the
fishing boat was struck by an
unidentified object, probably
a whale.
' The blow forward caused
the Donna B to take on water
prompting the call for help.
Band Camp to
Open on Monday
Ashland - Siskiyou Band
Camp 'will open for its third
season Monday morning, July
20, in Churchill hall on the
Southern Oregon college
campus, according to Dr. Her
bert Cecil,- camp secretary,
who reported : that advance
registrations were running far
ahead of previous years. -
Guest conductor of the camp
is Clarence Sawhill, authority
in the band field and director
of bands at the University of
California at Los Angeles.
Founder-coordinator for the
annual event is Glenn T. Mat
thews, SOC music staff member.
Students may either live on
campus in a dormitory, or at
home and come to the campus

the President's remarks on
Bohlen at his Wednesday news
conference were misinterpret

no idea of bringing Bohlen
into the State Department in
a highly responsible post.
Actually, these sources,
said, the administration still
hopes to persuade Bohlen to
take a ' $19,250 spot on the
State Department's policy
planning staff if he can be
persuaded to postpone his re
tirement. Soviet Relations Involved
A major portion of this
staffs work involves relations

Administration officials said
a final decision on bringing
Bohlen into the State Depart
ment would be made as soon
as Herter returns from the
Geneva foreign ministers con

told him no progress was be
ing made on the matter at that

Oregon Projects
Said Authorized

said the House passed and
sent to the Senate a bill to
authorize $90 million worth
of construction to assure con
tinuation of Army- Engineer's
projects in the Columbia and
Willamette river basins-'
The bill would authorize
$657,310,500 of water proj
ects.
Major projects included in
the work are: Ice Harbor,
Snake river, John Day Dam,
The Dalles Dam, Hills Creek
and Cougar reservoir, along
with, work on critical loca
tions on the Willamette river.
Rogue river harbor, Gold
Beach and Interstate bridge.
The appropriation would
also make funds available for
deepening of the Columbia
river channel between "Van
couver and The Dalles.

Prison Escapee
Nabbed in Portland
Portland (UPD -Thomas
Franklin Spalinger, 26-year-old
escapee from the Georgia
State prison, was apprehended
here' Thursday by agents of
the FBI, according to James
Milnes, special agent in charge
of the Portland office.
Milnes said Spalinger was
apprehended at a new car
agency here where he had
been working as a salesman.
He is . wanted by Georgia
authorities for unlawful flight
to avoid confinement for the
crime of burglary.
Milnes said he escaped
about a year ago by sawing
bars on the windows of the
Georgia institution's . Rich
mond public work camp,
i Spalinger was married last
May in Tillamook,' Ore., and
since has resided in Portland.
Billie Holiday,
Blues Singer, Dies
New York - UPD - Blues
singer Billie Holiday died
early today in Metropolitan
hospital after a long illness.
She was 44.
Miss 'Holiday entered the
hospital May 31 in serious
condition with several ail
ments. Death, which came at
3:20 a.m. (EST), today, was
caused by "congestion of the
lungs, complicated by failure
of the heart," .an associate
said.
Her husband, Louis McKay,
had been with her until a few
moments before her death,
the hospital said.
The Negro singer, who had
hit the top of her profession,
then fell to the depths in the
throes of marcotics addiction,
was said to have licked the
habit and to have been on her
way back when, in the words
of her booking agent, "her
motor just wore put."
UNREADY FOR SUB, WAR

Describes Slaying
Of Young Boys
San Diego-(UPD-The record
ed .voice of an accused mur
derer told a packed courtroom
Thursday how two small boys
were taken to a lonely moun
tain area by their mother and
her lover and strangled.
Kenneth Merriam, 38, sat
pale-faced as he listened to
his own voice coming from a
tape recorder sitting on a ta
ble near the jury of six men
and six women. The trial
started the beginning of the
week. It was recessed Thurs
day until Monday. ,
Took Virgil First
"I took my hands like this
and held down," said the
thick-tongued voice. "I took
Virgil (3) out first and then
came back for David (5)."
Then in a sobbing tone the
voice said: "I told her it
would be better- for her and
the kids to go back to Illinois.
But she didn't want to go back
there."
' Merriam was explaining in
the recording about killing
the two sons of his mistress,
Mrs. Wanda Brogdon, 33, last
May 2 shortly after they came
here from Rockford, 111.
Sheriffs deputies made the
recording several days after
Merriam, a house painter, and
Mrs. Brogdon were arrested.
Lt. Tom Isbell gently led Mer
riam to tell of the crime,
proddmg him with questions.
"Why did you do it?" ask
ed Isbell.
Wouldn't Mind'
' "They wouldn't mind or
anything else," said Merriam.
He explained the boys caused
he and Mrs. Brogdon trouble,
once by releasing the emer
gency brake on his car which
ran into another auto.
He accused Mrs. Brogdon
of telling him to "get rid"
of the boys.
"She told me, ' 'Honey, if
we are going to do 'it, let's
get it over with,"' said the
voice. The discussion on how
to kill the boys was carried
on all night until they finally
decided to strangle them in
the mountains, he said.
Merriam and Mrs. Brogdon
both have pleaded innocent
and innocent by reason of
insanity to the charges. They
already have been found sane
in a sanity hearing.
Argentine Navy
Secretary Stays
Buenos Aires (UPD Vice
Adm. Adolfo Estevez had a
half hour talk with President
Arturo Frondizi Thursday
night and then denied "cate
gorically" that he had resign
ed as secretary of the navy in
Argentina.
The denial came in the face
of persistent reports by a
number of informed sources
that Estevez - would - be out
within 48 hours.
Rebellious naval officers
have been seeking his resigna
tion or dismissal on grounds
he does not reflect their view
point and is too lenient to
ward officers who supported
ousted Dictator Juan D.
Peron.
Buenos . Aires newspapers
appeared with. banner head
lines on the naval dissension
and the navy secretariat fin
ally issued a communique de
ploring reports of a crisis.
The communique said the
navy "will keep its disci
pline." It criticized some re
ports as untruthful and asked
the press to cooperate for "a
better solution of the prob
lems of the navy."

Bros., over the movie "A Star
Is Born" was turned down
Thursday by Superior Judge
H. Eugene Breitenbach.
He ruled the deadline had
passed for filing a countersuit,
despite arguments by the
couple's attorneys that the de
lay has been necessary to col
lect photostatic copies of xiocu
ments. Producer Jack Warner
filed a $30,000 suit against the
couple last Dec. 18 to collect
a note signed by them in 1954.
The couple charged the
money was advanced them for
use in a combined European
vacation and promotion of "A
Star Is Born" in which Miss
Garland starred.

Paralytic Polio on Increase;
Not Too Late for Salic Shots
Washington (HPD Surgeon
general Leroy E. Burney
warned today that crippling
polio is on the upward march
this summer particularly
among the unvaccinated.
The nation's health chief
said that about nine out of 10
of the cases have been report
ed .among persons who have
not had anti-polio shots.
More Than Double .
Burney also told United
Press International the num
ber of cases of paralytic polio
this year is more than double
the total at this time last year.
The -Public Health Service
said there were 681 cases of
paralytic polio reported dur
ing the first 26 weeks of 1959.
This compares with 329 vic
tims during the same period
last year and "reflects the
consistently upward trend of
polio cases since April.?
Dr. Burney said preliminary
figures to be made public
later today - show the polio
rate rise continued this week.
Kansas City, Kan.; Des
Moines, Iowa; Little Rock
Ark.; and Oklahoma City,
Okla. were the hard-hit areas
which have reported a "sub
stantially greater" number of
cases this year. ,
"I cannot urge too strong
ly," Burney said, "the need
for pushing ahead with the
drive to vaccinate the unvac
cinated. It is hot too late
either to start or complete the
Salk shot series."
- Dr. Burney described as
"highly encouraging" the in
tensive community drives
which have been conducted
in recent months with the- re
sulting inoculation of hun
dreds of thousands of per
sons. As a result of these "get
vaccinated" campaigns, D r.
Burney said, there has been
a drain on the vaccine supply
and there may be "occasional
delays" during the next few
weeks, in obtaining vaccine in
some areas.
There are about 70 million
persons who have had one or
more of the three-shot series.
The PHS considers Salk
vaccine 75 per cent to 80 per
cent effective against the virus.
Last June, an advisory group
recommended a .fourth or
"booster" shot be given to
