The solar activity was de
scribed by scientists as the
greatest in many years.
The sun spots resulted from
an immense explosion of the
sun s gasses.
The huge flare on the sun
was observed early Tuesday in
Europe and its effects were
felt 30 hours later on earth. ..
It was the second such bom
bardment in the last 45 days
and a Standards Bureau
spokesmarisaid its 'effects
were expected to equal or ex
ceeded tfie record disturbance

To Measure Particles
.A cosmic 'ray balloon was
launched Wednesday by Uni
versity of Chicago physicists
to measure the subatomic par
ticles loosed by the solar blast.
The balloon was released
from Stagg Field on the uni
versity campus and drifted
high over the 'city, remitting
radio signals detailing the in
tensities and approximate
energies of the particles.

members of the Klamath In
dian tribe of Oregon regard

Under former rules, loans
could not be made to individ
uals of less than a quarter de
gree Indian blood. The amend
ment of the regulations was
made possible as a 'result of
legislation recommended by
the Interior Department and
recently enacted by Congress.
The Indian Bureau has been
making loans to withdrawing
Klamath tribe members of
one-fourth or more Indian
blood since last February! '
Loans have been made
without interest and . have
been set off against funds pay
able to the borrowers under
the Klamath termination act,
Flash Fire Aboard
Boat Injures Boy
Detroit, ure.-HFU-A nine-
year-old Portland boy was
out of the hospital and recov
ering today from burns he re
ceived when a flash fire en
veloped a boat on Detroit lake
Wednesday.
The boy, Donald Gaske, was
with his father, R. F. Gaske,
and two brothers when a leak
ing gas tank exploded. The
family was about 300 feet
from shore when the accident
occurred, , ' ,
A Mill City woman, Mrs.
Lee.Baasett, saw the explo-
ion and went to the 'rescue
in another boat. None of the
others aboard was injured.
, Donald was . taken to an
emergency hospital at Mill
City suffering from second
and third degree burns on his
legs and second degree face
burns. ,
McKay's Condition

that Hoffa is a "fountain-head
of . . . corruption" who never
will clean up the Teamsters.
Hoffa Refuses Cleanup
McClellan said congress and
the courts will have to under
take the clean-up job because
"notwithstanding Mr. Hoffa's
previous promises and assur
ances ... he has failed and
still refuses to remove known
criminals and - disreputable
characters."
The three court-appointed
monitors were to meet with
Federal Judge F. Dickinson
Letts to discuss a revision of
the rules covering their as
signment to oversee, a clean
up of the Teamsters.
The monitors were reported
to feel that they could get
faster and fairer results if
they conducted their own in
vestigations of rank-and-file
complaints rather than turn
ing them over to the union.
The monitors have investi
gated a few cases in the past

thority to conduct inquiries
over union objections

Ron E. Cordon of Rogue
Valley State bank was elected
vice president of the bank's
board of directors at a recent
meeting,' according to Clar
ence Young, president.
A graduate of Oregon State
college, Cordon has been with
the bank since 1954. .
The directors noted that to
tal assets of the bank have
passed the $5 million mark
and the board looks for con
tinued growth of the commu

Cohen's Girlfriend
Faces Sentencing

day on one count of perjury
arising out of her testimony

The 34-year-old showgirl
entered a surprise plea of
guilty to one count of per
jury Wednesday just five days
before she was to go on trial
for five counts of perjury.
She faces a possible sentence
of S2,000 fine and five years
imprisonment. -
Miss Renay , also agreed to
appeas before the Grand Jury
today, to testify again about
Cohen's finances, . including
two loans involving more
than $5,000 she raised for him.
Cohen, who once served a
prison term for income tax
evasion, is under federal
scrutiny on tax matters.

Belgian Pilot
Tells of Attack

Belgian Sabena airlines pilot
said today that one of four
Communist MIGs that forced
his plane down in Hungary
Wednesday nearly crashed
into him.
The airliner, a DC6, was
carrying 54 passengers from
Athens to Vienna. The Com
munists let the plane continue
after questioning the pilot on
the ground.
Capt. George Rolin, the
pilot, said he had to leave
the recognized air corridor in
an attempt to get around a
storm and veered north to
ward the Hungarian frontier.
"I do not think we left
Yugoslav territory," he said
Rolin said' four Hungarian
MIGs suddenly swooped on
his plane and waggled their
wings to indicate he should
follow them.
"Some of their dives at me
were really dangerous," he
saidj , "One MIG zoomed up
justi" a , few feet in . front of
my nose. I thought we were
going to. collide."
Jhe MIGs forced him to
land at Veszprem. He said the
Hungarians told him their ra
dar indicated his plane was
over Hungarian territory but
added that "if you leave the
corridor in the future because

Youngster Drowns
In Fern Ridge Lake
Eugene -(UPD- Larry Wyman
Chick, 9, son of George and
Donna Chick of Woodland.
Wash., drowned Wednesday
afternoon in a swimming area
at the northwest end of Fern
Ridge lake, 11 miles west of
here.
The Lane county coroner's
offices said the boy, who was
unable to swim, had been
playing in three and one-half
to four ' feet, of water, with
three cousins.
. He had been staying with
his aunt and uncle, Don and
Irene Chick of Junction City.
The body was discovered
when Shirley Deadman of
Springfield stepped on what
she thought was someone's
arm on the bottom . of the
lake. She told the coroner that
she ran to shore and no one
would believe her She said
that she returned to a raft in
the lake where two boys dived
into the water, and eventually
found Chick s body.
Woman Divorced
From 'TV Addict'

Petition Court
For Rehearing

Caryl Chessman
will petition the California
Supreme Court 'for a rehear
ing within the next two
weeks, according to attorney
Rosalie Asher.
Miss Asher, who visited
prison Wednesday, said the
Chessman 1 at San Quentin
convicted kidnap-rapist was
not optimistic that a new
appeal to the court would suc
ceed. However, she said he
planned to go back to the U. S.
Supreme Court if necessary.
"I think he has a better
than even chance in the U.S.
Supreme Court," she said.
Sentences Affirmed
The State Supreme Court
affirmed the two death sen
tences against Chessman last
week. Condemned under Cali
fornia's "L i 1 1 le Lindbergh
law," Chessman has spent 11
years in death row at San
Quentin. One of his principal
contentions is that the tran
script of his original trial was
faulty. '
Although not an attorney
of record for Chessman, Miss
Asher has been associated
with the case at various times
during the past-11 years.
"There is no doubt in my
mind that certain very valid
constitutional rights have
been violated," she said after
Wednesday's two-hour visit.
"I hope that ultimately he
will be saved."
Body of Florence
Man Discovered
Florence, Ore.-IUPD-The body
oi Egbert Straight, 76, missing
since June 29, was found in
some brush Wednesday south
west of Canary about five
miles from here.
The victim's son - in - law,
Charles Panschow, located
the body. Authorities said
Straight, apparently died of
exposure.
Straight was the object of a
widespread search when he
vanished after setting out to
pick berries. When the offi
cial hunt was discontinued for
lack of clues, relatives con
tinued to look for him.
