contender in the queen's con
test for the Jacksonville Gold
Rush Jubilee, according to
Hon McKay, assistant con
test chairman.
At the first weekly contest
meeting, iietsy BecK, spon
sored by Beck's Bakery, was
second high point contender
and Sherri Doe, sponsored by
the Big Y, was the third place
winner.
Two new entrants Wednes
day night boosted the total
number of queen candidates
to 12. The two new contest
ants are Shirley Walker,
sponsored by Don's Polar
Bar, Jacksonville, and Jackie
Rummel, sponsored by Mary's
Casa, Medford.
The next report meeting is
scheduled for Tuesday, July
14, at the U.S. Hotel in Jack
sonville. '

Centennial Picnic Set

Phoenix - An old-fashioned
picnic in observance of Ore
gon's centennial, will be held
at the Phoenix Community
club grounds Sunday, July 12
1 at 1 p.m. The public is invited
Those attending are asked
to bring enough food for their
family and their own table
service. Cold and hot drinks
will be furnished by members
of the Lion s Auxiliary.
Food will be served on
lone table by a committee
from the home extension unit,
Tables and benches will be set
up by a committee from the
grange. The Lion's club will
have charge of games and ac
tivities and awards will be
given. Those having centen
nial clothes are asked to wear
them.

lou Garner, 4-H leaders in
Jackson county, and other
4-H members who attended
the 4-H school in Corvallis
recently, will speak briefly
on their experience of the trip
and the school.

Seaman Apprentice Donald
MacKintosh, son of Mr. and
Mrs. A. H. MacKintosh, and
member of the Naval Reserve
Electronics division of Med
ford, is attending a 24 weeks'
radioman "A" school at San
Diego. Upon completion of
this schooling Donald will re
turn-to the local. unit as a
qualified seaman and will
await orders for active duty.
Two
, arrested Wed-
youths were
nesday on petty larceny
charges in connection with
stealing hubcaps, Medford
police reported.
One of the youths told po
lice in a signed statement he
had had three sets of hubcaps
stolen from his own car and
thought he would get some replacements.
The pair admitted taking
four hubcaps Wednesday eve
ning from a car on the lot at
Jay Allen company, 1078
Court St. One youth was re
leased to his grandparents
while the other was lodged
in Jackson county jail, police
reported.
RAPE-SLAYER TO DIE
San Diego, Calif. - (UPD -
Harvey M. Glatman of Los
Angeles, confessed rape-slay
er of three women, has been
sentenced to die in the gas
chamber Sept. 18. Superior
Judge John A. Hewicker
Thursday set the execution
date for the 31-year-old ama
teur photographer. Glatman
met his victims by advertising
for photography models. He
then strangled them with a
cord and left their bodies in
lonely desert areas.

Meanwhile, back on Main
street tempers rise. The drug

splutter in the night.
The hero, a light-skinned
Negro passing for white,
makes for the Canadian bor
der with the white girl who
loves him because he scowls.
Alas! Floodlights bare the
fleeing pair and machine
guns cut them down. Uncle
Sam has the border watched.
Author Never Saw America
Boris Vian, a Parisian
jacques - of - all - trades who
wrote the script, was not lim
ited in his description of
America, since he has never
been there. He died two
weeks ago of a heart attack
while watching this movie
version of his original novel,
"J'irai Cracher Sur Vos
Tombes."
The movie is the talk of
the sidewalk cafes and Amer
ican tourists flock to it for
three reasons to get mad, to
giggle or to gulp at the sex
scenes which would never be
shown in an American movie.
