Portlander Charged With Embezzlement
Portland (UPD A Portland
man, Harold O. Leloff, 59,
has been charged with em
bezzlement of $25,000 in con
nection with advertised funds
received for an unpublished
Centennial souvenir program.
Presiding District Judge
Ray E. Shoemaker Thursday
issued a warrant for Leloff.
The information charged
Leloff with embezzling funds
from the Western Alcan and
Surveys, Inc., a Portland firm,
through which solicitations
for the unofficial publication
were allegedly made.
The Multnomah county
grand jury which has called
a large number of witnesses,
received the case from the
federal postal authorities.

line outside the box office at
the Craterian theatre Wednes

ported. Young Hamilton was flip
ping a 50-cent piece into the
air, waiting to buy his ticket
with it.
Suddenly, according to the
report, two older youths
walked up to him. "Give me
that money kid.," one report
edly said, "or I'll beat you
up."
Hamilton gave them the
money, he told police, and
the pair ran up the alley
toward Bartlett st.
The movie was "Hercules."
Hamilton never did gej to see
it Wednesday night.' .

95 Degree Heat

wave accompanied by tear
causing smog and a rash of
brush fires lingered over most
of Southern California today,
threatening to push the ther
mometer up a sweltering
95 degrees.
The city's hottest day of the
year occurred Thursday when
the mercury rose to 95 de
grees, only one degree lower
than the all-time high for that
date set in 1886.
At least four separate brush
fires broke out in Southern
California Thursday as the
blazing heat scorched the al
ready dought-stricken area.
Families Flee Homes
Nearly 2,000 acres were
burned over in the exclusive
Linda Vista area of Pasadena,
forcing about 10 families to
flee their houses temporarily.
About 50 acres were black
ened in the Lake Hughes area
north of Newhall, 300 acres
near Ojai and about 2 acres
in West Hollywood. All the
fires were controlled.
Heavy smog crowded into
the Los Angeles Basin area
at the height of the hot spell
arid narrowly missed causing
a first stage smog alert.
Other high temperatures in
the area included 110 at Fon
tana, 108 at Reseda, 106 at
Ontario, 105 at Canoga Park,
102 at Arcadia, and 101 in
both Pasadena and San Gabriel.
(Nevada Man Faces
Charge of Murder

district attorney's office said
it probably will file today a
first degree murder charge
against Robert K. Ervin, 21,
confessed slayer of a 5-year-old
neighbor girl.
District Attorney George
Folley said a psychiatric ex
amination of Erviri showed he
was "able to tell the differ
ence between right and wrong
and therefore is legally sane."
Ervin was arrested Wednes
day for the slaying of Dolores
Stafford, daughter of Las
Vegas Review Journal state
circulation manager St. Elmo
Stafford. Her beaten and
stabbed body was found in
the attic of Ervin's home
Tuesday after an all-night
search.
'DEAD' CLIENT. FREED
Chesterfield, England-(UPD-Joseph
Hollis, 42, was acquit
ted of drunk driving charges
after a doctor testified that a
blood test showed he had
drunk twice the amount need
ed to kill him.
"According to this, my cli
ent is dead," Hollis' lawyer
objected.
The court refused to admit
the testimony and found Hollis
innocent.
Iowa is the top popcorn pro
ducing state in the nation.

Municipal Judge
Named at Portland
Portland (OPD Joseph J.
Labadie will take over as
Portland's new municipal
judge Aug. 5.
He was working as deputy
district attorney assigned to
the Municipal Court.
Labadie will succeed Judge
John Murchison who was re
cently appointed by Gov.
Mark Hatfield to the Circuit
Court bench.
Labadie was one of five
lawyers recommended by the
Multnomah Bar Association
Judicial Elections Committee
for the post.
He was appointed Thursday
