Aro Enemas Bad?
- It is curious that hundreds
of us doctors keep telling our
patients, "for goodness' sake,
never take aft
enema." For
40 years I
have been ask
ing my fellow
doctors why
they say this,
but so far no
one has given
me a good
reason. Most
Dr. Alvarez say mat iney
have met neurotic women
who were taking two or three
enemas a day, and they didn't
want their patients to de
velop "the enema habit." See
ing that I can interview a
thousand women without find
ing one with "an enema
habit," I can't get excited
about the danger.
I, personally, have never
seen anyone who had been
hurt by enemas. I once saw a
woman who gave me the evi
dence I was looking for. She
said that for over 10 years
she had taken at least two
or three enemas a day. What
interested me so much was
that she brought with her a
stack of x-ray films, showing
what her colon had looked
like every year during the 10
years. On comparing the size
of her colon when she started
taking enemas with its ap
pearance and size when she
came to see me, it was ob
vious that her bowel had not
been stretched at all, as many
doctors have feared it might
be. Then, when I looked into
the' woman's bowel with a
lighted tube, I saw perfectly
normal mucous lining.
Equivalent of Tears
If people will put into a
bagful of warm water a round
ed tablespoonful of table salt,
they will get the equivalent
of salty tears. Just as tears
don't injure the eyes,' so the
salty water won't injure the
inside of the colon.
In order to empty much of
the colon, the person must
be willing to stand a bit of

discomfort. As she runs the
water in, painful cramps will
come. With each, she should
pinch the tube for a few
seconds until the cramp passes
and then she should let the
water run in again. If she
lets all the water in the bag
run in, and then lets it run
right out again, her colon al
most will certainly be well
cleansed out. What many peo
ple do is to let" the water run
out the minute they get a
little cramp, and this means
that they will empty only the
rectum. Often, this is not
enough to bring relief of dis
tress. Bettor Than Laxatives

than the taking of a lot ofj
roughage or the taking of?
iaxauves. i or older people I
have no objection to a mild
laxative, but I think it ought
to be taken only two or three
times a week. One good fea
ture about an enema is that
many persons can take one in
10 minutes. With this their
constipation problem is solved
for a day or two or three. A
few persons need a bowel
movement every day, while
many others can get by com
fortably with two movements
a week, if these are big
enough.
In using roughage in the
diet the great trick is to
change every few days. Other
wise the bowel will get so
used to one" type of roughage
it will no longer react. Many
of my patients are cured by
taking canned figs one week
and cannecL plums the next.
