The coincidence rate in the
Pacific Coast league hit a new
high Wednesday night.
It wasn't enough that all
the visiting teams reversed
losses of Tuesday night, which
they did, but three of the re
versals were by identical
scores of 7-4.
Wednesday night's, heroics
probably tied a record for the
number of 7-4 games in one
night in one league, but no
official records are available
of this sort of thing.
Ill those 7-4 affairs, Spo
kane defeated Vancouver,
Salt Lake took Phoenix and
Portland beat Seattle. In the
nonconforming contest, San
Diego thrashed Sacramento
6-1.
The Solons managed to
maintain their two-game lead
over Vancouver, but the rest
of the league moved in a
little closer. There are now
only five and a half games
separating the first six teams.

An all-comers track and
field meet at the Medford
High stadium this Saturday
will be the first of three this
month under sponsorship of
the Oregon. Olympic Develop
ment program and the City
of Medford parks and recrea
tion department.
, The July 11 session and one
on July 18 will be warm-ups
for a championship meet on
July 25.
Saturday's meet will be in
two sections. Juniors will vie
from 10 ajn. to 12:15 p.m. and
high school and open divisions
from 5 to 7 pjn.
AATJ Members
Junior classes for boys and
girls has 10 and under, 11-12,
13-14 and 15-16 age groups.

17-18 years of . age boys andi
the open or senior group in
cludes college ' age men, al
though younger athletes may
participate.
Participants must be AAU
members. AAU cards may be
obtained for nominal dues at
the meet registration table.

has applied for membership
and that he and Don Peek
and Jack Quails, co-chairmen,
would consider the bid. If
the. team is accepted, the slate
may be extended later, into
August.

Although not too many res
idents may realize ittf next
year will mark the 75th or
Diamond anniversary of Med
ford's founding as a munici
pality. Medford was incorpor
ated as a town on Feb. 24,
1885. (It officially became a
city later-on Feb. 6, 1901).
Civic groups undoubtedly
will get together to plan some
sort of a celebration for the
municipal birthday. We sug
gest that sports groups start
planning soon for some sort
of event or activities marking
the anniversary.
Someone already has asked
whether men will again be re
quested to "grow beards and
wear crazy hats."
MADDOX DEBUT
Terry, Maddox, ex-Mod-ford
high baseballer and
University of Oregon All
American, recently made an
auspicious debut for the Eu
gene Emeralds of the pro
fessional Northwest league.
A siory in the Eugene
Register-Guard staled, ". . .
Maddox dramatically and
single-handedly bailed in all
four runs ... Saturday
night in his first game in a
Eugene uniform and carried
the Emeralds by the Yak
ima Bears . . ."
Maddox was signed by
the Emeralds a week after
being released by the Sa
lem Senators. He had re
joined Salem after finishing
a tour of Army duty at the
Presidio, San Francisco. The
ex-Medford pitcher and out
fielder, playing in left field
for the Ems, socked a three
run homer and singled in
another marker.
NO SURPRISE
Pitcher Derald Wooton had
the eyes of his Grants Pass
teammates popping Sunday
when he made his bow as a
Merchants' moundsman. That
he did was no surprise to Med
ford baseball followers who
watched Wooton pitch in high
school here and in semi-pro
ball for the Medford Cheney
Studs of the former Southern
Oregon league.
In 1956, in between seasons
with Los Angeles (Brooklyn)
Dodger farm clubs, Wooton
was the leading chucker in
the fast SO loop. He obtained
unconditional release from the
Dodgers in 1958.
According to Bill Palmroth
in the Grants Pass Daily Cour
ier, the Merchants may have
lost a ball game to Ashland
last Sunday, but "they cer
tainly ' found themselves a
pitcher in Wooton." Palmroth,
who is on the Merchant squad
as well as being sports scribe
for the Courier, said that
"Wooton looks to have a lot
of life in his fast ball yet" and
that he blends in a. sharp
breaking slider.
TYLER TO AIR FORCE
Ernie. Tyler, ex-Medford
high baseball , pitcher, was
to leave here today for Port
land lo enter the Air Force.
After tests and physical
exam in Portland, he is to
be sent to San Antonio,
Tex., for 11 weeks of basic
training. Tyler anticipates
a four-year lour of duty.
He said that he would try
to make flight school after
his basic training is over.

light games. Still would like

league with play under lights.
