Woman Editor Sounds Call
For Return to Femininity
By GAY PAULEY
UPI Women's Editor
New York -(UPD- Okay girls.
Let's start being all- woman
again and return the pants to
their rightful owners the
men. . .
Women' don't look like
women, talk like . women or
act like women once they don
trousers. The feminine de
mureness, the softness of voice
disappears. The mannish
stance and masculine sprawl
take over. "
Pants, to put it bluntly, rob
us of our sex appeal.
I bring up this subject after
long brooding, because we
seem to be sacrificing fem
ininity for comfort. We have
adopted Bermuda shorts, short
shorts, slacks, toreador trou
sers and jeans as our costume
from sunup to sundown: for
the supermarket, for the trip
to the station, for shopping
downtown.
We're forgetting to be girly
type girls.
Wrong Sort of Whistles '
Doubt my conclusion? All
right, check for yourselves on
the tune of the whistle from
the men standing on the cor
ner. The whistle if there is
one at the girl in Bermudas
is usually derisive. -
Any man who gives an ap
preciative reaction to this
sexless apparel is a candidate
for psychiatry.
Now, before the wrath of
the shorts, slacks, pedal push
er, Capri pants and jeans
manufacturers pours in on me
wholesale, let me say this:
Pants do have a place in our
wardrobes. But for leisure
and for work. Who would
argue against them for the
tennis court, the family boat,
the picnic grounds? Or, what
is more practical when you're
washing the dog, scrubbing
the bath, painting the bed
room or pruning the roses?
Although come to think of
it, my mother - did every
household chore, including
painting, in dress and apron.
We children remember her as
an always feminine person
who permitted her daughters
no nonsense with shorts.
Never For Street Wear
We wore them for sunning
in the backyard or for active
sports. Never for street wear.
We would have been blistered
if caught even at the corner
drugstore in jeans.
After this column, I may be
labelled a fuddy-duddy but if
you're a trousers advocate,
could be you haven't taken an
honest look at yourself in a
three-way mirror.
The bulge the skirt dis
guises, the slack discloses.
One man in our office com
mented that "not one woman
in a thousand looks good in
slacks, especially viewed ' in
departure."
"That," said another, "is
giving the girls a break on
percentage."

Good Buys
Pork, Eggs
New York -(UPD- Good buys
on fresh and cured pork prod
ucts, torn turkeys, fryers and
eggs await this week's thrifty
housewife at food marts across
the nation. She'll also find
large supplies of fresh fruit
and vegetables.
A 20 per cent increase in
the supply of gobblers over a
year ago has made torn tur
key an exceptionally good buy
for this time of year. Fryer
marketings continue heavy
too and consequently prices
this week should average
about two cents below a week
earlier.
The big spring pig crop has
been putting protein-rich pork
on meat counters at steadily
lower prices in recent weeks.
Center cut chops can be found
as much as a dime a pound
cheaper this week than last.
Other meat supplies around
the country this week end in
clude leg of lamb, fresh
ground beef, rib end roasts,
smoked picnics. :
Egg prices resumed their
decline in many sections of
the country over the past
week after a two-week ad
vance. They should be avail
able this week end about
three to four cents a dozen
cheaper than at the start of
the month. -. '
In fruit bins, generous sup
plies of cantaloupe, watermel
ons, bananas, seedless grapes,
apples, bing cherries, peaches,
plums and nectarines are
available in most sections.
Vegetable values on the
plentiful list include beans,
corn, yellow onions, cabbage,
potatoes and squash. For the
summer . season salad lover,
lettuce, celery, peppers, cu
cumbers, escarole, endive and
tomatoes are all in large
supply.
