    In the Day's News
By FRANK JENKINS
Last week end, the high
ways of America were full of
cars. The National Safety
Council believes that 45 MIL
LION of them took to the
roads over the Fourth of July
weekend and travel led NINE
BILLION car miles.
The traffic death toll in the
United States from 6 p.m. Fri
day to midnight Sunday was
somewhere in the neighbor-
270, with, another 13,000 per
sons suffering disabling in
juries.
The moral that is normally
drawn from these statistics is
that the automobile is a KIL
LER - because of the speed
that it makes possible, a dead
ly and merciless killer.
TJmmmmmmm. I wonder.
Among those who will
read this piece will be many
who can recall a day when
cars 'were few and far be
tween and horse-drawn vehi
cles were numerous. In that
period of our nation's history,
there were no WEEK ENDS.
The economics of those days
forhaHe such luxuries. The
MACHINE- with its fabulous
capacity to multiply human
effort and GET THINGS
DONE FASTER, had not yet
come into universal use. The
be accomplished by strong
backs and busy hands, with
only a few rudimentary tools
to help.
Consequently, Sundays and
big national holidays were
about all the time that could
be spared from work.
But- 7
In those bygone days-
The dusty country roads on
the Fourth of July would be
FULL of horse-drawn vehicles
and the dusty streets of the
county-seat towns would be
simply CRAWLING with
them. '
Don't think those days
didn't have traffic jams. They
did. Unless you've driven a
dozen miles on a dusty road,
with a horse-drawn vehicle
about every 20 yards and the
gay young blades with their
' top buggies and their three
minute trotters weaving in
and out and trying to GET
AHEAD through chocking
clouds of dust, you've just
haven't seen traffic, jams.
TJut, you say-
"You're talking about
the DISCOMFORS of slow,
crawling traffic on dusty,
Knmnw ftiinT-ir rciAw , anil
streets. -
"What about the DAN
GERS? "What a bout the crippling
Injuries? .
"What about the DEATHS?"
SHADY COVE-TRAIL
Many Visitors in Area
By EVALYN P. WATSON
Shady Cove-Trail - One of
the notable events of the fish
ing season, at least for the
younger set, was the catching
of a 4 pound, 22-inclr, salmon
off the Shady Cove bridge
June 25 by 8-year-old David
Elder, son of. Mr. and Mrs.
Gilbert Elder of Shady Cove.
A good prediction is that Da
vid will turn out to be quite
a fisherman when- he grows
up.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Stafford
of Trail entertained with a
dinner party in their home
June 26. Guests were Mr. and
Mrs. C. R. Waters and grand
daughters, Rosemary and Pat
ty of Paramount, Calif.; Mr.
and Mrs. J. P. Rose and Mrs.
Ella Deal of Long Beach,
Calif.; and Floyd Waters of
Camp White. The group is
staying at Sunset - on - the
Rogue while here.
Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Mc
Whorter of Shady Cove have
had a lot of company within
a short period, including Mc-
Whorter's son and grand
daughter, M. E. McWhorter
and Alice McWhorter of Napa,
Calif.; his daughter and fam
ily, Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Allen and children, Diane and
Carolyn of Vallejo, Calif.; and
friends, Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Smith and children, Jimmy
and Donna, Mrs. Smith's
mother, Mrs. Nina Morgan
and Donna's girl friend, Sue
Bailey, all of Myrtle Point.
Mrs. Zane Bidwell and
children, Carolyn, Sandra,
Deana and Zane Jr., are leav
ing soon to spend several
weeks in Salem, visiting with
Mr. Bidwell's father, R. V.
Bidwell and Mrs. Bidwell's
mother, Mrs. Donna Tierce. .
Nutt c Shady Cove.
Mr., and Mrs. E.. R. Sheri
dan of Minneapolis, Minn.,
and Col. and Mrs. Jack Fuller
of La Mesa are visiting with
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kindschi
of Trail. Mrs. Sheridan, Mrs.
Fuller and Mrs. Kindschi are
sisters. .
Tid you ever see a runaway?
J Especially a runaway on
the jam-packed public square
of a county seat town on a
Fourth of July . . with the
street full of men, women and
CHILDREN . . . the fear-mad
dened horses tearing through
the crowd . . . people scream
ing as they struggled to get
out of the way . . . maybe
some young hero making a
death-defying dive at the
horses' bit in an effort to
pull them down . . . some
times going down himself un
der the iron-shod hoofs or the
iron, tires. - ' .
If you've neveT seen that,
you don't know, what excite
ment is . .'. and often serious,
crippling injury . . . and,
sometimes, DEATH. .
There was hazard on the
highways then.
A thought in closing:
Suppose our population
had grown as it has grown.
Suppose the automobile had
never been invented.
, Suppose that on this Fourth
of July weekend that came to
a close Sunday night there
had been 45 MILLION horse
drawn vehicle varying all
the way from team - drawn
spring wagons to red-wheeled
rubber - tired buggies drawn
by fancy trotters - on our
highways.
In that event, there would
have been a lot of traffic fa
talities maybe as many as
350. - -i
