America's Top Entertainment
Teams Split for Varied Reasons
Editor's note: This is the first of
three dispatches telling what's hap
pened to some of the famous enter
tainment teams of the recent past,
and why such partnerships are be
coming increasingly fewer.
By RICK DU BROW
UPI Hollywood Writer
Hollywood -(LTD- America's
top entertainment teams have
discovered that united they
stand but divided they stand
to get richer.
The result is that taxes-
combined with death, dis
agreement and the desire to
"go it alone" are breaking
up most of show business fa
vorite partners.
"Death has taken a heavy
tell. Just last March, it took
Lou Costello from Bud Ab
bott. In recent years, it has
also taken Oliver Hardy from
Stan Laurel and Fred Allen
from Portland Hoffa.
A bitter personal argument
split one of the great comedy
teams of all Dean Martin
and Jerry Lewis.
Many other teams have
broken up because one or
more of the partners wanted
to "go it alone" either for
personal satisfaction or tax

Tax Stand Explained
These include the Marx
Brothers; Sid Caesar and Imo-
gene Coca; the Dead End
Kids; Jackie Gleason, Art Car
ney and Audrey Meadows;
and the Andrews Sisters, back
together again but not nearly
as successful as before their
split.
Why do taxes figure so
prominently? Veteran show
man Eddie Cantor explains it
this way:
"Suppose you get $7,500 a
week as a team. That's 3,750
apiece. If you can get booked
as a single, there's a good
chance you'll get $5,000 or
$1,250 more. And believe me,
with taxes the way they are,
that's becoming more and
more the way performers
think.
''Regardless of the differ
ence of opinion of people like
Dean and Jerry, they found
out they're better off econo
mically apart. And the young
er kids have taken note. There
are some young teams, . but
farmer Nathan B. Miller, sav
most of ' the kids work as
singles if they can possibly
do it."
Taxes have had another im
portant effect: Many of the
famous teams of yesteryear
work only occasionally be
cause they are well-heeled and
can't see the sense of labor
ing for such small returns.
Among these are Ole Olsen
and Chic Johnson, Phil Har
ris and Alice Faye, the Ritz
Brothers, Lum and . Abner,
and Fibber McGee and Molly
who will be portrayed by
two other, people on a tele
vision series next fall.
Only Handful Left
What major teams are left,
then? The answer, sadly, is
there are only a handful
among them Lucille Ball and
Dezi Arnaz, Amos 'n Andy,
Peter Lind Hayes and Mary
Healy, and Louis Prima and
Keely Smith. -
The Three Stooges are
making a comeback thanks to
TV re-runs of their films, and
Jimmy Durante and Eddie
Jackson work together when
they're talking.
The big question, of course,
is: "wnat causes leuas De
tween successful partners?"
Said' Cantor: "It's like any
business. Money is one thing
but every actor, has a certain
amount of ego, and it's a
wonderful feeling to know he
doesn't have to depend on
anyone when he's on."
This was the case with Ab
bott and Costello, Martin and
Lewis, the Andrews Sisters,
and Jackson and Durante.
Abbott Never Bitter
Abbott and Costello broke
up in 1957. Early this year,
Lu started a new solo career
as star of Minsky's "Follies of
1959" in Las Vegas, Nev. Ab
bott never was bitter, how
ever. When Costello died last
March, he wept: "The door
was always open " to start
again. Poor little Lou he's
dead, dead.
Recently, Abbott announced
that he and veteran vaudevil
lian Eddie Foy Jr. would form
a new comedy team. Until
then, Bud had refused to
work, saying he was practi
cally broke and there was
"no use" trying to earn money
when the government would
only take it to satisfy back
tax claims.
Most people thought Martin
and Lewis were ideally
teamed until they split. Then
Martin said: "After a while,
Jerry got out of hand and be
gan pushing me out of the pic
ture. When you talked about
Martin and Lewis, you
thought of Lewis, and I knew
it had to be that way. Now
I'll know it's me they're com
ing to see."
Single at Heart
Lewis also was a "single" at
heart. Jerry said: "I'm not
going on for money. I could
retire now and give my fam
ily all they need. Retire at 32?
They'd bury me at 34." Both
Martin and Lewis have done
well on their own.
The Andrews Sisters, on the
other hand, flopped when
they split up in 1953. Maxene
and Laverne couldn't find a
replacement' for Patty, the
blonde star of the trio, who
quit because "I wanted to ex
pand as a performer. Patty
did well as a single, but in
1956 she rejoined her sisters.
Three-Man Act
Durante and Jackson were
partners for 42 years until
last year when the Schnozzola
took on a new teammate,
Sonny King. Jackson, deeply
hurt, left, saying: "I'm di
vorced from Jimmy. He's a
sweet guy, but I know I can
make it on my own." He
failed to set the world on fire,
however, and last April he
rejoined Durante and King in
a three-man act in Las Vegas.
A show business historian
could go on and " on listing :
teams, but Cantor sums up the
feeling of veteran performers
well:

Person Has Right to Enjoy
Air in Natural Stale
A rendering plant was lo
cated outside the city limits
of La Grande and the odor
from the plant during the
summer months was very of
fensive to many inhabitants
of the city because of the di
rection of the wind in that
season.
Restraining Order
Several citizens brought a
suit to restrain the rendering
company from maintaing and
operating the plant. The court
permanently enjoined the
plant owners from operating
the plant during the summer
or at any time it would be
come a nuisance to the citi
zens. The case illustrates that
every person has the right to
have the air pass over his
property in its natural state
and free from artificial im
purities consistent with the
locality and character of the
community. Any business, al
though in itself lawful, which
necessarily impregnates large
volumes of air with disagree
able, unwholesome or offen
sive matter, may become a
nuisance to those occupying
nearby property if the pollu
tion impairs the comfort or
enjoyment of their property.
Thus smoke, dust, noxious
fumes or gases, or stenches or
smells, may constitute a nuis
ance under some circum
stances. Must Be Indispensable
No action, however, can be
brought if the pollution of the
air is reasonably necessary to
the enjoyment of life and in
dispensable to the progress of
society. But such pollution
must not be exercised in an
unreasonable manner. This
type of pollution would in

clude smoke from the heating

interest statutes and ordi

a crime to pollute the air.
A recent development is
the anti-smog ordinance of
the city of Los Angeles that
makes it a misdemeanor and
cause for restraint for cars
that give off unusually objec

the city streets. The city now
may require the installation
of a device that will remove
nearly all of the noxious gases

exhausts.
