Why Are Som Men Sterile?
Usually a man is sterile be
cause he has .had some in
flammation in what is called
the epididy
mis, which is
a small mass
of tubules on
the back of
the testicle.
These tubes
carry the
spermata z o a
from the tes
ticle into the
Dr. Alvarez tube Which
runs up to the seminal vesi
cles, or little sacs which lie
next to the prostate gland at
the base of the bladder. When
these ducts are all plugged
up by scar tissue there is not
much that can be done. There
is an operation, but urologists
tell me it so commonly fails
that they do not care to per
form it. Usually about the
only thing the couple can do
is to adopt a child, or to have
a so-called test-tube baby, ob
tained by "artificial insemina
tion" with sperm taken from
an unknown man.
Many men, of course, and
even men in excellent health,
have a low sperm count; why,
no one knows. Sometimes a
certain type of medication
will cause the sperm count
to rise for a while. In some
cases, there are many sperm
atazoa, but they are poorly
formed, or not very motile.
They are not active enough
to work their way up through
the womb and out into one of
the tubes on each side of the
womb i- where fertilization
takes place. In some cases, if
the couple will have inter
course perhaps only once a
month and then at the time
when 'the woman has just
ovulated and hence is most
fertile, the man will have ac
cumulated enough . sperm so
that a child can be conceived.
It sounds like a logical thing
to try.
Violent Objections
I won't go into the problem
of artificial insemination with
sperm from an unknown man,
because so many religious
people have such violent ob
jections to this. They tell me
God would not approve of

Los Angeles-flJPD-The Fire
department explained very
patiently why it couldn't ap
prove the action of a citizen
who painted a nearby fire hy
drant pink to match his
house. "We don't lack a sense
of humor or beauty," depart
ment spokesman Earl Leon
ard said. "But it means we
have to repaint the hydrant.
And that means more work,
which ' means more money,
and more taxes."

such a thing, but I would give
a lot if they could tell me how
they know that God disap
proves. I'd like to know why
He should disapprove. If a
woman who, all her life, has
prayed for a child can have
one in her own body, and if
the husband has absolutely no
objections, I don't see why
the neighbor across the street
should get all hot and bother
ed about it and should go to
law to try to stop it.
I can see why the courts
should be disturbed because
they have to decide about the
inheritance of money and
property, but even the courts
ought to be satisfied if the
woman's family is. As a phy
sician, all my life I have been
thinking, time and again, how
wonderful a world this would
be if everyone would mind his
own business.
For writing this, I will get
a lot of nasty letters from
good people who know just
how this world should be run!
