THE THRIFTY WARD WAY
Variety Made Colt
Peacemaker Versatile
The famous Colt "peace
maker" revolver Is usually
shown as a long-barrelled, .43
caliber six-shooter, but it is
also to be found as a short
barreled job in various other
calibers and without any
lessening of value.
A case in point is one that
I saw recently with only a
three-inch barrel. It had no
hand-ejector, such as Is found
on the peacemakers that were
issued to the cavalry. But
otherwise it was a typical
single-action weapon with a
walnut stock and a blued bar
rel and cylinder, the latter be
ing fluted for half its length.
This type can be recognized
even without the ejector
through the markings. Along
the barrel are the words
"Colts Pt. F. A. Mfg. Co. Hart
ford, Ct." and the patent dates
stamped on the frame cover
the years .1871 to 1875.
The same markings are to
be found on the peacemakers
made for the military, the
FOUR MISSING BANK NOTES MAY PROVE RICH FIND
commonest having a seven-and-a-half-inch
barrel. ; But
some, of the kind issued to
artillery and infantry units,
have somewhat shorter bar
rel lengths.
Despite the age of these
weapons, their shooting qual
ities are still an important
factor in determining their
value. And since, as a general
rule, the longer the barrel
the better the gun will shoot,
one would expect those with
the seven-and-a-half-inch bar
rel to have the greatest value.
Other things being equal,
however they do not. Those
with the shortest barrel us
ually bring a higher price.
One of these six-shooters
with a three-inch barrel and
of only .38 caliber sold re
cently for $200. It was in ex
cellent condition, but so was a
long-barrelled cavalry model
that took considerably long
er to find a buyer and brought
only $150.
The National Gold Bank
Notes of California all have
a substantial value to collect
ors, but one of them is so rare
that whoever finds one could
just about name his own price.
That one is for $500. None
of these $500 notes, issued by
two San Francisco and one
Sacramento banks, is known
to exist today. Not even the
banks have one. But since
four of those originally issued
have never been redeemed, it
Is quite possible that one is
still lying around somewhere,
locked in a safety deposit
vault or stuck away In some
old desk.
All National Gold Bank
Notes were redeemable in
gold and secured by'U. S.
bonds that had been deposited
with the Treasury at Wash
ington. .
The $500 Item states that
consideration on the face of
the note between two vig
nettes, oie showing a woman
with a sword seated on a gun
carriage and the other depict
ing the arrival of a steamship
in New York harbor.
There are also a red treas
ury seal and the signatures of
John Allison, Register of the
Treasury, and F. E. Spinner,
Treasurer of the United
States.
On the reverse, the design
consists of an oblong panel
with rounded ends containing
a collection of gold coins rang'
ing from the $1 piece to the
$20. . -.. - - .
The names of the San Fran
cisco banks were the First Na
tional Gold Bank, and the Na
tional Gold Bank and Trust
Company. The Sacramento
bank was the National Gold
Bank of D. O. Mills and Co.
The values of other National
Gold Bank Notes are high,
even the smallest-for $5-car-rying
a price of better than
$100 today-provided it is in
good condition.
- But whether in good condi
tion or not, one of the four
missing $500 note would com
mand a price well into the
thousands for whoever was
lucky enough to find it.
WAR II SAVINGS STAMPS RETURN HIGH DIVIDEND ,
Anyone who has some post
al savings stamps that were
Issued early In World War II
will get much more out of
them if he does not turn them
In to the government for re
demption in either cash or
bonds.
In some cases, the value of
these stamps has soared in a
way that makes other exam
ples of Inflation seem conserv
ative. An acquaintance, who put
part of his shipyard pay into
the stamps before entering the
Army, came across a block of
six recently in going through
some old papers.
The stamps were of the 30
cent denomination and of a
dark blue-green color. The
legend was "United States
Postal Savings," and the
amount was printed diagonal
ly across the face.
The block was from the
margin of the original sheet
and it happened to be the one
with the number of the plate
printed on the edge of the
margin. .. .
Though the owner knew
that postage stamps sometimes
have a large premium value,
he didn't realize that there
were also premium values for
practically every other kind
of stamp the government has
ever Issued. Luckily for him,
the postal clerk, when the
stamps were offered for re
demption, suggested that he
find out about their collector's
value first.
It was easy enough to do.
By checking one of the major
stamp catalogues, he quickly
learned that the value of the
plate block of six that origi
nally cost him $3 was now
$50.
While the values of postal
savings stamps have by no
means risen proportionally in
other denominations, virtual
ly all of those issued during
the war years have a market
value today that is higher
than the value of the stamp
plus the nominal rate of in
terest paid by the government.

pjru in the Community hall.
All members are urged to
attend.
Gold Hill Grange
Vacation time is not help
ing the attendance at Gold
Hill Grange meetings, it was
reported.
At the regular meeting of
the Grange Thursday, July 2,
many officers as well as oth
er members were out of town
thus bringing the attendance
below average. However, the
meeting was very successful.
A. A.' Walker reported on
flood control. The decorating
committee, Josephine Loefler,
Mildred Wright, and Willie
McLean, had renovated the
flower baskets which the
Grange has been using for
many years. These and some
beautiful new baskets were
filled with flowers and made
a lovely display.
Refreshments were served
by Dale Collins and Grace
Bruce.
Those in charge of the pro
gram for the next meeting,
July 16, request all partici
pants to be at the hall at
7:30 pjn- Monday evening,
July 6, for rehearsal.
