and has come up with these provocative findings;
how do they compare with your impressions?

kill himself for love than a woman is. In
fact, surveys show that men driven to
suicide by unhappy love affairs outnumber
women by three to one.
What is responsible for women's crav
ing to keep up with the latest fashions?
Psychologist EL L. Talbert has made a
special study of this matter at the Uni
versity of Cincinnati. He finds that women
relieve their fears, anxieties, and feelings
of inadequacy and insecurity by buying
clothes fashionable clothes. This provides
their egos with a reassuring shot in the
arm, and helps to banish self -doubts.
"Often," Prof. Talbert says, "this practice
achieves the desired end. And so far as
mental hygiene is concerned, fashion
change can be definitely commended. It
provides means of asserting our equality
to other members of the. community, as
well as superiority to the fashionless."
Women are, of course, far more in
tensely preoccupied with fashion than
men are; and it is significant to note in
this connection that studies show the
female of the species to be far more sub
ject to feelings of insecurity than the male.
Are most women satisfied with their
husbands?
In a nationwide Gallup Poll, women of
all ages and walks of life were asked this
question: "Knowing what you do now, if
you had it to do over, would you marry
the same man?" Only 47 percent were
certain that they would. The rest were
inclined to feel that they might have done
better if they'd allowed themselves more
time to pick and choose. The survey
showed that characteristics of a husband
which were most likely to make a wife
wish she'd married another man were:
(1) Stubbornness and irritability ("My
husband's always blowing his top over
something or other. You have to 'walk on
eggs' to get along with him. And he's too
stubborn and opinionated to ever admit
being wrong about anything"). (2) Drink
ing or gambling too much ("What he
spends in bars would have paid off the
mortgage" and "He spends too much of
his pay check playing the horses or in
poker sessions with 'the boys'"). (3) In
considerateness ("He doesn't pay enough
attention to me," 1 get tired of being
. taken for granted," and "He never notices
how I look, or thinks about taking me out
except once in a blue moon").
At what age is a woman the most lieau
tiful in her late teens, when she's in the
bloom of youth? In her twenties, when
she has more poise? In her thirties, when
she's a woman of maturity?
To find out the answer to this question,
the American Institute of Public Opinion
polled representative men and women of
various ages from Maine to California.
The vast majority felt that a woman is
most beautiful between the ages of 23 and
25. Quite a number of men, however, felt
that a woman is most beautiful "when she
is first pregnant," or "after the birth of
her first child."
Do brunettes retain their youthful
appearance longer than blondes?
Studies show that they do. More than
any other feature, a woman's eyes tend
to give away her age. And tests con
ducted by Dr. Eugene Fischer, as well as
those of other leading authorities, show
that blue eyes are quickest to fade and
lose their youthful brightness and luster.
Blonde skin is also more sensitive to the
ravages of sun and wind.
Can you tell how feminine a woman is
just by glancing at her figure?
Yes. Scientific research shows that in
most cases you very definitely can. At
Stanford University Medical School and at
the University of California, investigators
gave women students psychological tests
to measure both masculine and feminine
personality characteristics. The results
were then compared with their body-build
measurements.
It was found that the least feminine
women tended to have the slimmest hips,
the flattest chests, the least sightly legs.
More feminine women, on the other
hand, tended to have well-rounded
bosoms, a well-defined hip flare, and legs
which were smoothly curved.
Is it true that women have evolved
farther from the apes than men have?
Biologically, science finds that they
have. Experiments conducted by the emi
nent biologist, Prof. Samuel J. Holmes,
shows that so far as man's physique is
concerned, he is closer to the ape than
women are. But where intelligence is
concerned, the question is decidedly moot
Investigators have not been able to decide
which, sex has most in common with the
monkeys on this score.
