Parish Plans
Centennial Fiesta
A full program of entertain
ment is planned at the Centen
nial Fiesta scheduled for Au
gust 7, 8 and 9 in the Medford
armory, according to George
Holtzinger, general chairman
for the coming event.
Open to the public and
planned for all age groups,
the Fiesta is a bazaar-type
project of the organizations
and members of Sacred Heart
parish. This is the first time
in more than 10 years that
such a festival has been
planned to take place off par
ish grounds, although several
years ago such a bazaar was
held annually in the old
armory.
The Fiesta is registered as
an official Oregon State Cen
tennial function and the Cen
tennial theme will be followed
through out in decoration,
dress and entertainment.
Booths Planned
More, than 20 booths, fea
turing antiques, hand-made
Christmas gifts, baked foods,
Centennial and Rogue Valley
souvenirs, children's items,
candies and other goodies, are
already signed up by the plan
ning committee.
"There will be a Table Rock
"Saloon," serving 'root beer
with entertainment by play
er piano. Quartet and "can
can girls". There will also
- be a country store, a picture
taking booth, games for young
and old, mechanical elephant
and horse rides for the chil
dren, and refreshments.
One of the featured attrac
tions will be a display of ears
by the Old Timers' club, in
contrast with the new 4-door
sedan which will be given
away the final evening of the
fiesta. Several other valuable
items will be given away at
the same time, -among them
a bicycle and a floor-waxer.
The two and. a half day
event will also include a show
of local talent, an afternoon
of fun for the children, a free
dance, an authentic old-fashioned
dress contest for wom
en and men and an old-time
fiddlers contest.
Assisting Holtzinger as co
chairmen for the Fiesta are
Ernest Flakus and T. W. Du
gan. Representatives of all
parish organizations are on
the planning committee. Rich
ard Randolph is financial
chairman and Don Sweeney
is in charge of publicity.
Talent Contest for
Annual Kiwanis Fair
This year's Kiwanis Cen
tennial fair, Aug. 20 through
23 will feature a Talent con
test for amateurs of the
Rogue River Valley.
Dick Lamont, entertain-'
ment committee chairman,
announced that Talent con
test winners will be sent to
the Oregon state fair for com
petition in the State Talent
contest.
The Talent contest will be
open to anyone of amateur
standing. The local winner
will be sent to Salem with ex
penses paid by the Medford
Kiwanis club.
The Shadow's a local sing
ing group, won last year's
Kiwanis Fair contest and
went on to win the State con
test. In addition to the Talent
contest there will be featured
entertainment each night of
the fair.

Personnel Complete
Training Program
The annual training pro
gram for new and returning
seasonal personnel at Crater
Lake National park has been
completed and all have . re
ported to. their summer duty
stations, according to Super
intendent Tom Williams.
The training is scheduled
at the start of each summer
season to acquaint new em
ployees with the national park
service standards of service
to the public.
Included among the sub
jects covered during the ses
sion were interpretation, na
tional park service history
and policies, law enforcement,
accident investigation and for- j
est fire training. j
The federal bureau of in-
vestigation ana U.S. Commis
sioner Frank J. Van Dyke as
sisted in the law enforcement
phase of training, Williams
said.
Included' in the training
were seven fire control aides,
seven ranger-naturalists and
12 park rangers.

cancer, according to current
