is being rushed in order to

The old two-story building,
which has been in use for
over 30 years, was condemned
last spring by the state fire
marshal. Plans call for a
$125,000 unit when complet
ed. An auditorium-gymnasium
with a seating capacity of
1,000 will be added when the
classroom needs are met. This

A NUCLEAR FISSION specialist was engaged by a culture--loving
tiote! proprietor to address his guests after luncheon
on the tree-shaded lawn of the establishment. "These folks are
up in New Hampshire for a
vacation," demurred the
scientist. "Nobody at all will
come to hear a talk on nu
clear fission."
He couldn't have been a
worse prophet. Despite the
fact that it was a perfect
day, the guests turned out
en masse to hear the lecture.
"I must admit I was grati
fied," the scientist told a
smiling girl when the
session was over. "Don't be
too gratified," she warned.
"After all, what else can you
do after a heavy meal? Golf
and tennis are too strenuous, and if you go swimming maybe
you get a cramp and drown!"
"You can get from New York to Chicago in two hours by piano
and 18 hours by train," observes Paper Magnate Sam Himmell, "but
I can't see much difference between the two. I still can't get the
windows open."

river Tuesday, Oregon's Gov
ernor Hatfield pushed a but
ton that set in motion the
multi - million dollar Johns
Manville plant that will sup
ply the 11 Western states with
a new type of building ma
terials. The gathered dignitaries at
the opening ceremony listen
ed attentively. For a moment,
nothing happened. Manager
Bill Graham grinned and
spoke into the mike. "They're
just like your TV set," he
said. "Thev have to warm up."
They did! ' .
Over the loud speaker came
the high hum of modern ma
chinery gathering speed. The
crowd in the new. plant's
pleasant little auditorium re
laxed. The years of planning
had come out all right.
It was working.-
IT WAS a momentous occas
ion, deserving a special page
in the history of this part of
the Far West.
Why so momentous?
It marked the first com
mercial use of jackpine, the
weed tree we had tried for a
century to get rid of. There
on the south bank of the Wil
liamson yesterday, Cinderella
of the Woods put on the gold
en slipper and it FITTED.
She's on her way now.
JACKPINE cordwood goes in
at one end of the plant. It
is first debarked. The bark
goes into a furnace to provide
heat for the later processes.
Even the squeal, to use an
ancient crack of the meat
packing industry, is utilized.
Then it is pressed against
Gargantuan 'grindstones that
reduce it to pulp. The pulp
moves in a steady, unbroken
procession through complicat
ed machine after complicated
machine. At the other end, it
corned out in a wide variety of
materials useful in our mo
dern building economy.
All these materials have

The Old Timers club mem
bers meet tomorrow at 8:30
a.m. at the A and W Root
Beer stand parking lot to
leave at 8:45 a.m. for Ash
land to participate in the
parade. -
Members and their families
are asked to wear Centennial
costumes attire for the oc
casion. Members will take a
luncheon to be held in Lithia
park immediately after the
parade.
Cars will be on display in
the park during the afternoon.
Sanity Hearing
Due Park Hermit
Los Angeles-(UPD -A sanity
hearing will be held today for
Dennis Farrell, 32, the hermit
of Griffith Park who for six
years lived a lonely life in
the sprawling park.
Farrell, a veteran of the
Korean war, agreed to the
hearing along with his. par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Christo
pher P. Farrell, North Platte,
Neb. The parents were reunit
ed with their son Wednesday
for the first time since he en
tered the 4,200-acre city
owned park in late 1952 be
cause he was "sick of living."
Farrell, bearded and in tat
tered clothing, emerged from
the park last Monday seeking
help from police. He was pro
nounced "very sick" by a psy
chiatrist. Salem -(UPD Wednesday was
the 10th anniversary of Ore
gon's multi-million dollar for
est rehabilitation program.

Myrtle Creek Man
Drowns in Surf
Reedsport - (UPD - A Myrtle
Creek man drowned and .an
other was rescued by quick
acting coast guardsmen late
Thursday when their com
mercial fishing boat capsized
in the surf at the mouth
the Umpqua river near here.'
Trapped and drowned in,
the cabin of the 27-foot fish
ing boat Ethel was Finzer
Hall. Nathan Cleveland, also
of , Myrtle Creek crawled
through a small cabin win
dow and escaped. Z
Cleveland was rescued by
Engineman 1st Class Ray Mil
ler and Seaman Leroy Stump
as the pair maneuvered their.
40-foot motor lifeboat through,
the boiling surf to pick him
up. He was treated for numer
ous cuts and bruises.
Cleveland was unable to
say why the boat capsized.
Hall's body had not been re
covered yet.
CHURCH MAN DIES
Marlboro, N.H.-OIPD-A. Rol
and Elliott, 64, director of im
