Virginia County Closes Schools To Avoid Integration

public schools of rural Prince
Edward county closed offi
cially today in the most dra
matic move taken by a south
ern locality to avoid the ef
fects of an integration decree.
The schools in effect closed
definitely when the school
term ended early in June but
the closure became formal to
day when the county began
operating under its new
budget.
Teachers Out of Work
The school closures and
public education for more
than 1,600 Negro students
and 1,300 whites in the
"southside" Virginia county,
a defendant in the Supreme
court's historic 1954 desegre
gation ruling. The action puts
70 white and 70 Negro teach
ers out of work.
The county Board of Super
visors voted a month ago to
close the schools in defiance
of an integration order hand
ed down by ths Fourth U.S.
Circuit Court of Appeals,
which cancelled &t seven-year
integration delay granted by
Federal Judge Sterling Hut
cheson of Richmoi d.
The supervisors made their
action final last Friday by
adopting a budget for the fis
cal year starting today with
no money included for edu
cation. The same day, the Su
preme court refused a peti
tion by the county school
board asking a delay of the
integration order pending a
full appeal.
