The Medical
Dangers of Second Marriago
As a physician, I wish more
widows especially widows
with a little money in the
bank" knew
how danger
ous it is to
marry again.
Time', and
again in my
practice I see
women who
have gotten
into terrible
t r o u ble be-
DrTArvares cause iney aia
not have the would-be second
husband investigated a bit be
fore they married him. Many
a time, when I have said to a
very unhappy woman, "W h y
didn't you have your lawyer
or your bank get a rating on
the man before you married
him? Why didn't you find out
a little more about him -
whether he had a job, whether
he was an honorable member
of the community, or whether
he was honest and willing and
able to work, or whether he
was usually sober? Why didn't
you look into these things be
fore you married?" Usually
the woman's answer is,' "Well,
doctor, when you love a man
you don't think of investigat
ing him. That would suggest
distrust."
I remember' a widow of 50
who was head of a fashionable
girls' school in the East. She
had on her board of trustees
some very prominent men.
Then along came a man who
made violent love to her and
represented himself as a
wealthy oil man from Texas.
She yielded to his blandish
ments and married him. She
said nothing about this to her
Board, and planned to keep
the marriage secret, if only
because her name was so im
portant to the school. Within
a 1 week after her marriage,
she discovered that the -man
didn't have a cent or a job.
He w a s ' a good-for-nothing
who had married her to live
off of her. Worse yet, he had
two good-for-nothing sons who
also intended to live off of
her. When she refused to hand
oyer money, the husband
threatened to blackmail her
and . cause such a scandal as
to ruin her and the school. For
a while she paid hush-money,
but under the strain she went
to pieces nervously . and that
is how I happened to see her.
When I found out what her
basic trouble was, I made Her
go to her Board and confess,
and then, with the help of a
good lawyer, and his friend,
the Chief of Police, they got
rid of the scoundrel.
Hives Over Skin
Another nice woman, a wid
ow and a school teacher . of
45, came to me with big hives
all over her skin. I found that
they had appeared when, aft
er marrying a man who had
represented himself as a well-to-do
physician who would
make life easy for her, she
promptly discovered that he
was too psychotic even to get
a practice, and had married
her to live off of her.
Because -of her shame and
reluctance to make public her
folly, she kept auiet and sup
ported the man until her an
noyance with him Caused her
to go to pieces nervously. For
tunately, her son was a law
yer, and when given permis
sion to go ahead, he soon got
rid of the man.
I could go on for pages tell
ing such stories-all . of them
showing how important it is
for a woman with a good job
or some money to get a finan
cial rating and a character
rating on the man who. pro
poses marriage. Her banker,
or "any able lawyer or firm
of lawyers, ought to be able
to get this done for her. An
other thing that all women
with money should do when
they marry is to keep their
funds in the?1 own hands and
under their own control. A
hundred times women have
told me of their folly; perhaps
during their honeymoon, when
they turned over their money
to the new husband. As a wo
man like this told me the

other day, when the husband
got the money in his hands, he
ordered her to go out and get
a job, so as to earn more cash.
Every day he went' to the
race-track. Before a year was
out, she was so anxious to get
rid. of him .that she didn't
much mind when, before leav
ing, he announced he had lost
every cent of her money on
the horses!
Whenever I see a widow
who has come to grief marry
ing a man whom she didn't
really know, I am reminded
of the maid who, on leaving
her old mistress to get mar
ried, wanted to leave with her
a few. hundred dollars repre
senting her savings. When the
mistress said, "Oh, - no; you
had better take that with
you," the tnaid said, "What!
you want me to have all that
money around with a strange

Tuberculosis in Children
Every so often "people ask
me about the -dangers that
children run when they live
in a home in which some adult
has active tuberculosis. AH I
can say is that if I had active
tuberculosis, with bacilli in
my sputum, no one could hire
me to live in a house where
there were 'children. I simply
would not have this on my
conscience, knowing how easy
it is for a child in the home of
a tuberculous person to get
the disease, perhaps in a se
vere f ormf What can happen
is shown by the experience of
the family of my college
chum. Because they . did not
believe in disease, they let
their four children play in the
room, of the coughing . old
grandmother who had the
type of tuberculosis . of the
lungs which neither heals up
nor finishes off the victim. As
a result, a daughter had tu
berculosis " of : the hip-joint
which ' ruined her life; a son
died of tuberculosis-in .his
thirties and my chum died of
it when he was 22. Only one
child, the eldest,; who was in
his teens when the 1 grand
mother came to live with the
family, escaped the infection.
In some cases, a baby crawl
ing around in the room of a
tuberculous uncle or aunt will
get a , tuberculous meningitis
and die in a short time.'
