go for a Sunday afternoon
drive, he packed three spare
tires and often used them
all. By 1930, two spares were
still the rule. Now, represen
tatives of three leading tire .
manufacturers report that
with new improvements the
days of the spare tire may soon
be over. . 1
The improvements being
considered by all three com
panies are based on the idea
of a tire within the tire. In ef
fect," the tires would have
built-in spares.
In addition to the obvious
advantage of increased trunk
space, the company spokesmen
pointed out that elimination of
the spare would decrease car
weight and allow greater free
dom of styling.
The dual compartment tire,
being developed by the B. F.
Goodrich Tire Company and
the Goodyear Tire & Rubber
Company, consists of two
chambers, one inside the oth
er. Each of these compart
ments is inflated through a
separate valve. In case of a
blowout, the inner tire would
serve as a crutch to get the
car to a service station. Tests
conducted by Goodyear on
taxicabs revealed that both
the outer and the inner tires
were punctured in only per
six per cent of the blowouts.
