Formosa Strait
Aggression Policy
Told by Admiral
Aboard Carrier Midway at
Sea-dTD-America's policy of
retaliation against possible
Chinese Communist aggres
sion in the Formosa Strait
has been spelled out by Adm.
David Welsh.
The commander of Carrier
Division 5 said any attack
from the Chinese mainland
- upon a task force of the 7th
Fleet while it is engaged in
stopping any invasion of
Quemoy or Formosa will bring
a U.S. attack on the base
which launched the attack.
Bomb Methold Shown
Welsh made the statement
following a demonstration of
a new vertical loft method
of delivering a nuclear bomb
to its target by jet aircraft.
Welch's division will take
station on active patrol off
the Chinese coast with the
7th Fieet late this summer,
His largest carrier, the Mid
way, demonstrated mock nu
clear bomb attacks for 27 Call
f ornia newsmen, guests of the
Navy.
Also shown were Sidewind
er air to air missiles which
Adm. Welsh said resulted in
virtual stalling of Chinese
Communist air activities after
Nationalist Chinese fighters
were armed with them. .
Bomb Tossed Straight Up
In a new method of delivery
. to insure pinpoint accuracy, a
simulated nuclear bomb was
tossed straight up miles in
the air by a supersonic naval
jet.
The jet flashed in and up
directly over the target, re
leasing the bomb while point
ed straight up. The jet pulled
over and away to safety and
was miles distant when the
bomb hit a smoke target 1,000
yards abeam of the Midway
The new loft bombing tech
nique followed demonstration
of the old "lob" delivery in
which the bomb is released
far distant from . the impact
point to arch Its way to the
target using the jet's forward
impetus.
