at the White House:
President Eisenhower is said
to have reacted somewhat
caustically when told that one
of his Democratic critics in the
Senate had cited three brief
engagements in one morning
as representing the extent of
his working day.
A member of the adminis
tration who frequently reflects
the President's feelings said:
"If the President wanted to
dignify this sort of thing-and
he doesn't-he might observe
that a senator would not like
his working day measured
only by the time he spends in
the Senate floor."
Midday Break
Eisenhower usually is in his
office around 7:30 ajn. He
takes a midday break from the
office at about 12:30 p.m.,
returns about, 2 pan. and re
mains until sometime between
5 and 6 p.m. Frequently he
is on the telephone with gov
ernment officials until much
later in the evening.
This time of year, he plays
golf on an average of two
afternoons a week. He usually
returns to his office late in
the afternoon.
When - possible, he spends
his week ends in Gettysburg,
usually from Friday afternoon
to Sunday afternoon.
Actually there is nothing
very original in attacking a
President for the time spent
away from his desk. Former
President Truman used to
catch it hot and heavy from
Republican critics for his

the President's assistant mili
tary aide, got a surprise thrill
the other afternoon. He was
called to the Presiden't office
on the double and burst in to
see the smiling chief execu
tive flanked by other military
members of the staff.
Whereupon the President
produced the gold leaves sig
nifying the rank of major and
pinned them on Crittenberg
er's shoulders.

At Hotel Medford
Pianist Bob Coverly is now
playing patrons' requests at
the new piano bar in the Hotel
Medford's cocktail lounge,
Manager Danny Marmo an
nounced yesterday.
Coverly has appeared in
dinner clubs in New York,
Washington, D.C., and Toyko,
Japan, Marmo said, as well as
having radio experience with
stations in Detroit, Cincinnati,
and Louisville. '
"We have succeeded in of
fering our patrons an, out
standing Centennial year cele
bration feature," Marmo said;,
"We are happy to contribute

Curry Grand Jury
To Study Shooting

pez Durran, 22, McNary,
Ariz., late Monday was
charged with involuntary
manslaughter in the fatal
shooting of a companion and
was bound over to the Curry
county grand jury by Justice
of the Peace William Fuller.
Durran was held here in
the county jail in lieu of
$2,000 bond. A coroner's in
quest Monday afternoon re
turned a verdict of involun
tary manslaughter in the
death Sunday of Herbert Eu
gene Sample, 21, also of Mc
Nary. The jury ruled that Durran
was . holding a 30-30 rifle
when it discharged, killing
Sample. The shooting . oc
curred in a cabin on the Sixes
river. . "
Sheriff R. G. Sabin said
Durran told him he and Sam
ple were attempting "fast
draws" on each other just be
fore the shooting. Sabin said
the two came to Oregon look
ing for work.

Hoover Turns Down
Bid by Hatfield

field says, former President
Herbert Hoover has advised
him he won't be able to be on
hand when the Oregon Cen
tennial wagon train arrives at
its final destination Inde
pendence, Ore.-this summer.
Hatfield said Hoover told
him President Eisenhower has
asked the former chief execu
tive to take on a commission
assignment in August.
Hoover said it was a disap
pointment to have to turn
down the invitation. He asked
Hatfield to meet with him
July 17 in California and Hat
field accepted.
