Msya cuttle
tion is the "pick-up" girl,
Penicillin will work well in
most cases of syphilis, but
there is a small percentage in
which, after strenuous treat
ment, the blood tests will re
main positive, suggesting that
the disease has not been en
tirely wiped out. In the case
of gonorrhea, there is a ten
dency for a type of germ to
develop which is resistant to
penicillin.
Paternity Suits
Recently, Dr. Leon N. Suss-
man and attorney Sidney B.
Schatkin, of New York, told
the American Academy Of
Forensic Sciences that, if only
because of a great increase in
the number of paternity suits,
the time hat come when courts
must make up their minds
whether or not they, are going
to trust the blood tests which
in many cases, will show that
a man could not possibly be
the father of a certain child,
Dr. Sussman and Schatkin be
lieve that 32 per cent of the
men named as defendants in
paternity suits are falsely ac
cused, but 18 per cent Of them
give in, rather than go to the
trouble of contesting the suit.
Only some 10 per cent of the
accused men fight the charge
in the courts.'
According tft the authors
the blood tests provide the
strongest possible defense, du
in only 13 states are these
tests accepted as decisive. So
far as scientists can see, the
tests ought to be used in all
such cases. They don't show
that a certain man is the fath
er of the child, but if the
blood groupings of the mother
and the supposed father are
known, in half of the cases
it can be said definitely that
the man could not possibly
have been the father. It would
seem that if scientists now are
perfectly sure of this, judges
ought to be, also. It should be
obvious that a man who does
not possess in his body cer
tain characteristics cannot
pass them on to his child. We
all have sense enough to know
that if a very blonde Scanda
navian woman were to have
a black-haired and black-eyed
child, she could hardly ac
cuse a very blond man of be
ing the father. The principle
is the same when a scientist
uses the blood tests.
Napoleon Bonaparte had
cannon taken at the Battle of
Austerlitz melted down to
provide bronze for the sculp
tured sheathing of a 144-foot
monument erected in honor
of his soldiers iri the Place
Vendome in Paris.
The temperature of the air
itself is not higher in the sun
than it is in the shade, accord
ing to the National Geogra
phic society, but people think
it is because the sun heats
their clothing and skin.
