Amendments To
Plug Loopholes
In Taxes Sought
northern Democrats carried
to the Senate floor today their
fight to plug tax loopholes
which cost the. government
about $2 billion a year in
revenue.
They will try to tack four
or more amendments to a bill
which would extend for
another' year the high Korean
war tax rates on liquor, wine,
beer, cigarettes, autos and corporations.
Four of the . amendments
(yere rejected by the Senate
Finance Committee Wednes
day when' it approved the
bill. However, the group ac
cepted one proposal, which
would repeal the 10 per cent
tax on domestic train, air
plane and long-distance bus
tickets.
Houm May Kill It
The Senate was expected to
approve this amendment but
the House probably will kill
it. The northern Democrats
added to the Korean tax ex
tension last year an amend
ment to repeal the levies on
passenger and freight travel.
The house went along only
with the freight provision.
The loophole amendments
wouia reduce the oil and gas
depletion allowance, reneal
part of the tax concession on
dividend income, restrict busi
ness deductions for entertain
ment and apply a withholding
tax on interest and dividend
income.

State Rights: Sen. John L.
McClellan (D-Atk.), a member
of the Senate Judiciary Com
mittee, said he would press
for Senate action on a states
rights bill similar to the one
,the House passed Wednesday.
The House bill would prevent
, a federal law from nullifying
a similar state statute.

of her son which left most of
his estate to a woman he ac

Mrs. Helen Lescher Bessolo,
of Galesburg, 111., retained
Hollywood attorney Jerry
Giesler to investigate her son's
June 16 suicide. She said she
planned to contest the will at
a July 10 hearing.
Giesler said Wednesday he

committed suicide.
