Governor Long
Speaks To People
OnSmuggledTape
Baton Rouge, La. - (CPU, -Gov.
Earl K. Long appealed
to th people of Louisiana in
a smuggled tape recording
Wednesday night to pray him
ut of the mental hospital
Into which he said he was
railroaded by his "jealous"
wife and ambitious nephew,
U. S. Sen. Russell B. Long.
Political observers specu
lated the colorful meander
ing stump-type speech, broad
cast on radio stations through
out the state, might draw
thousands of political sup
porters to the Covington Jun
ior High school basketball
court where Long will appear
for a district court habeas
corpus proceeding Friday.
Wifo Flews Stat
.His wife, Mrs. Blanche
Long, whom he bitterly -accused
of conspiring with his
political enemies, fled the
state Tuesday indicating she
would make no further ef
fort to force mental treat
ment on her husband. Friends
said she believed he would
be released a Friday's hear
ing and feared his alleged
"homicidal tendencies."
The court will not rule on
Long's sanity but on whether
he was properly committed
to the state hospital.
Wants. Sanity Ruling
New Orleans radio station
WNOE to which Long's at
torney, Joe Arthur Sims,
took the original recording,
quoted the attorney as say
ing Long would prefer a san
ity hearing -"to enable, him
to refute-harges that he suf
fers from mental instability.'
The iMon also quoted him
as saying that 15 doctors
were being flown to the hear
ing by chartered plane.
Long said:
"I feel certain that bav
ins a man like the Hon. Rob
ert D. Jones of this district
: deciding my case that I'll be
a free man Friday."
Judge Jones had been
asked earlier if he could be
described as a "Long man"
politically. He replied: "I
want to make it quit em
phatic that whatever politi
cal affiliations I may have
will never go over into my
court."
Long said he had never
"tried to hurt" his political
enemies. 'I have never be
lieved in reprisals ... and I
want to say this: I have no
idea of impeaching anybody,
taking advantage of any
body." .
State in 'Good Hands'
He implied he was not
presently governor and said
the state was in "good hands"
- those of Lt. Gov. Lether
Frazar and "President pro
teia Bill Cleveland."
Long's speech, taken from
the hospital by Sims, was
delivered in a strong, clear
voice. It wandered and di
gressed, but veteran state
house reporters said it
"sounded like the same old
Earl."
, "This is ov. Earl K.
Long talking from the MaiK
, ' deville hospital," he started'
out. "I'm glad to tell you
good people that as far as
mentally, I never was in bet
ter health than I am today.
In my whole life, I've never
been unconscious except
when I was asleep."
Later" in the speech h
said, "I've satisfactorily re
covered mentally."
Said Underweight
.- But he said he was 11
pounds underweight "after
they got through shoving me
from one street corner to an
other, and put me on stretch
ers and tying me and shoot-
ing me with hypodermics."
"Eve been undermined by
my nephew, by my wife, and
my supposed-to-be-cousin Ar
thur Long in Baton Rouge,
who means no more to me
than the moon," Long said.
"Thes people who wanted
to kill the loan shark bill
and Russell Long wanting to
be governor has conspired
with my wife, who is one of
the most jealous women that
God ever let live on this
earth, and really and truly
-she Jas vlry little to be
jtalous about."
