Iipo Given Drivers Who
JHave Children in Car
What goes on inside an
automobile definitely may af
fect th driver's ability to
control it. Police Chief
Charles P. Champlin remind
ed Medford motorists last
week.
It is especially important to
realize this when families
start on vacation trips, Chief
Champlin said. Children
turned loose in the confines of
a car, he said, can cause acci
dents at their worst and at
best can cause drivers to come
home with frayed nerves.
Chief Champlin said his of
fice had been asked by the
state department of motor ve
hicles to pass on some tips for
keeping children in hand dur
ing a long vaca'tion drive,
i ; The department, he said,
warns that children should be
taught never to put hands or
arms out windows, never to
climb on seats, and to keep
hands off door handles, gear
agiif t lever, Ignition key, lights
tyid steering wheel.
(Recommended
The department said travel
(Kperts recommend that par
en' try to keep youngsters
hfppy on long driving trips
by providing them with
game that does not require
physical action and by stop
ping occasionally to allow
them to let off stored-up
steam.
The authorities also recom
mend that parents take along
a bag of surprises to be
opened at intervals to help
keep children interested and
contented.
"No one knows how many
accidents have been caused by
drivers becoming distracted
by the actions of their young
passengers," Chief Champlin
added, 'Taut the wise parents
will do everything possible to
let the driver concentrate on
the job at hand

Student Trainee
Works in Welfare
Bradford Everson, under
graduate sociology major at
the University of Washing
ton, Seattle, has joined the ;
Jackson county welfare de
partment staff for the summer
months as a student trainee,
the welfare department has
announced.
Everson is one of the col
lege students placed with
welfare departments through
out the state for the summer
months to experience social
work. They are supervised by
a qualified staff member to do
such jobs as aiding case work
ers and processing applica
tions for public assistance
grants, helping in the prepara
tion of certifying foster homes
and assisting in short term re
search projects.
Everson will do a charac
teristics study of persons
under 21 years of age who
have applied for general as
sistance during the previous
winter, department sources
said. This is to help the wel
fare agency understand more

it necessary to apply for pub
lic assistance, such as lack of
education, employment skills,
physical and social dis
abilities. The resulting infor
mation will be made available
to such local institutions as
the public schools.
Following completion of the
summer months' training
Everson will Return to com
plete his senior year at the
