EmerHns Consultant In Medicine,
Mr.yo Clinic
Emeritus Professor of Medicine,
Mayo Clinic
Clair M. Kos, of the Iowa
Medical School, said that 54
per cent of his patients were
hearing decidedly better five
years after this type of opera
tion. Some of the patients,
after hearing well for a while,
had slipped back a bit, but
in half of them, the improve
ment was lasting.
Ear Noises
At the meeting of the ear
men, Dr. Bruce Proctor, of De
troit, called attention to the
fact that the Ear, Nose, and
Throat men keep seeing many
persons whose ear noises are
due. to a little stroke, such
as, for years, I have been
describing. This, for a time,
may cause difficulty in swal
lowing, or the person may see
double, or may be dizzy or
may have some failure in
health, and in his ability to
work. "Because of ear noises,
dizziness and perhaps nausea,
these people often are sus
pected of - having Meniere's
disease. But this is a disease
of the inner, ear which causes
an impairment of hearing; and
hence, when the ear man finds
no sign of any disease in the
ear, he can rule out Meniere's
disease. What is unfortunate
is that there is no very good
treatment for ear noises of
any kind, and especially for
those that are due to a little
stroke. ,
Apparent Cause for Hardening
of Arteries
As I have had to say sever
al times in this column, we
doctors no sooner think we
know something about the dl
etary cause of hardening of
the arteries than we learn that
what we thought we knew is
not all-important. As many
persons will remember, first
we were much concerned
about cholesterol, and thought
that the amount of this sub
stance in the blood was the
important factor. Then, along
came other research workers
who thought that certain lip
ids (fat-like substances in the
blood) were even more close
ly related to the production of
arteriosclerosis and heart at
tacks. . .
Now come some chemists
such as Dr. Margaret J. Al-
bnnk of Yale University, with
evidence to indicate that the
common triglyceride, which
makes up most of the fat in
our foods, is a most harmful

substance when too large
amounts get into our blood
and stay there. For instance,
she says that in one study,
reported on a while ago," she
found that most of a group
of men who had. suffered a
heart attack had normal am
ounts of cholesterol in their
blood, but jwo-thirds of them
had an abnormally high level
of triglyceride fat. Because of
these constant changes of
opinions of experts, I cannot
get up any enthusiasm to or
der my patients to go without
cholesterol or to go ithout
fats or to take only vegetable
fats or fish oils. I am going to
wait and see what happens.
