You Mar Find
A Fascinating Hobby
To this column come many
letters telling of strange and
unique bobbies that readers
have developed or discovered,
and at which the hobbyists de
vote a great deal of time and,
in many instances, reap con
siderable profit.
Take 4 Mrs. Mills for in
stance. She collects- bracket
fungi, being careful not to mar
or fingerprint it when the
fungus is fresh. She hangs
them up to dry, then paints
pitcures 'on them, or carves
designs in the hard, tough
outer skin. Many ; of these
exotic objects have been sent
to distant points; others deco
rate Jier home.
A friend of this , column
wrote me a short time ago
and wanted information on
fish scales. He gathers them,
and after carefully cleaning
and drying them, he displays
them. He now has nearly 400
kinds.. The field is wide open
and he never expects to col
lect a complete set. Think of
the fish scales most of us
throw away.

New York (DTD American
television viewers saw a hazy

A one minute film of the

Prince Philip for Canada and
the U. S. was transmitted from
London to Montreal over the
trans-Atlantic telephone ca

Small Worlds
Around Us
By Lynn M. Watkins
Another reader, a lady, col
lects colorful feathers. Some
she patterns into pictures and
designs, but most are mounted
on colored cardboard, care
fully named and classified.
She too has a wide range of
material from which to select.
A friend of mine a few
years ago began the serious
collection of wild flowers He
confined his collecting i to a
single county, and as of last
year had reached surprising
total of over 400. varieties; he
admits that there is still a
long way to go. '
Mrs. Sylvia Erickson com
bines her hobby with her col
lege studies. She collects sea
weed and algae. This is a vast
and relatively unexplored
field. The seaweed is gathered,
washed, and shaken out until
only the specimen desired is
retained; then it is placed be
tween sheets of blotting paper
and left to dry.
Many Colors
Seaweed comes in ' a wide
range of colors and patterns.
Some look like sections of fine
lace; others have the texture
of velvet. The naming and
classification of seawoods is in
itself a complicated task, as
there are roughly about 100,
000 kinds, and no living per
son has the faintest idea how
many more there are still un
known. -
There is a wide and varied
galaxy of interesting and un
usual hobbies that people en
joy; and everyone agrees that
everybody should have one.
Even if you select one that
doesn't pay off in dollars and
cents, as so many have, it
nevertheless will give you a
new insight into this world of
unusual things.
