Support Necessary
For Economic Base
Ashland Full comunity
support will be necessary to
broaden the economic base of
Ashland, according to Dr,
Christian P. Hald, who spoke
Tuesday to the Ashland Cham
ber of Commerce.
Dr. Hald is president of the
private corporation, Ashland
Promoters, Inc., jwnich 11
working closely with the Ash
land 'Economic Development
commission in a program for
new payrolls and industry for
Ashland.
He said that "it became ap
parent 'some time ago that
there must be a private or
ganization which could do cer
tain things which a municipal
ity cannot do with its funds.
For that reason a group of
business men, all deeply in
terested in the future sound
growth of the city organized
Ashland Promoters Inc."
Stock in the corporation is
$1 per share and at present
more than $2,700 has been
subscribed.
NO DUTY ON BEAUTY
Washington-flJPD-A thing of
beauty is a joy forever, ac

have ruled that the charms
and therefore the earning
power of models, showgirls
and even stripteasers do not
diminish with the passage of
time and consequently they
cannot spread out their in
come over a long period of
time for tax purposes.

And certainly, everyone got here, had a mountain, county
in on the act from the earlist
Spanish explorers who spot
ted our shore in the 16th
century to contemporary real
estate men.
About one quarter of our
place names are of Indian
origin. Others came from
Spanish and English explor
ers who arrived by sea; still
others are from early fur
traders-French, English.Span
ish and American-who ven
tured overland.
Pioneers named 'many
places after eastern towns for
which they yearned, and, in
turn, had places named for
them. Heroes of the Indian
wars also got their share.
Oregon's Name Mystery
The exact origin of the
name Oregon itself is still a
mystery, but late scholarship
indicate it niay haverginiafc,
ed in the Mississippi valley.
A 1765 English document
refers to the River of the West
as the "Ouragon." It was writ
ten by Maj. Robert Rogers in
a petition to explore country
west of the Great Lakes.
' The first use of "Oregon"
itself was by Jonathan Carver
in his "Travels Through the
Interior Parts of North Amer
ica," published in London in
1778.
Some historians think he
got the name from Maj. Rog
ers petition.
. A poet William Cullen
Bryant-made the name stick
in his 1817 poem "Thanatop
sis" where he refers to the
"Wilderness where flows the
Oregon and hears no sound
save its own" dashing."
Cases can be. made for
French fur traders giving the
river its name from the
French word "Ouragan"
meaning "Windstorm."
Some historians think it is
of Spanish origin, perhaps
from the province of Aragon,
but there are no records of
this. Cape Perpetua and Mece
ta Head were named by early
Spanish explorers seeking the
legendary northwest passage.
The river was finally named
by a young Boston fur trader,
Robert Gray, who discovered
its mouth in 1792 and named
it after his ship "Columbia."
Indian Names
Willamette and Multnoamh
are both Indian names and
Santiam, Molalla, Clackamas,
Clatsop Coos and Klamath
are all named after Oregon
tribes. '
Americans are also represnt
ed. President Thomas Jeffer-
! son, who sent Lewis and Clark
and city named for him.
Polk county was named for
President James Polk who was
in office when Oregon became
a state 100 years ago and the
town of Dallas was named
for his vice-president, George
M. Dallas.
Linn, Benton and Douglas
counties .were all named for
U.S. members of Congress
who helped Oregon."
Named by Pioneers
The origin of , Portland's
name is well known. It was
named after Portland, Maine,
by the toss of a coin between
Francis Pettygrove and A. L.
Lovejoy. Had Lovejoy won,
named - Boston, after Boston,
the city would - have been
Mass.
Albany was named after Al
bany, N.Y,
Civil war heroes honored
Include Gen. U. S. Grant for
whom, Grant county was nam
ed, and Gen. Phil Sheridan,
for Sheridan. Both men serv
ed in Oregon before the war.
Col. Edward Baker, for whom
Baker is' named, resigned a
U.S. Senate seat and was kill
ed early in the war.
' Another general honored
was Gen. Canby who was shot
at a "peace conference" in
1873 by Captain Jack, leader
of renegade Modoc Indians.
Jack was later captured and
hanged.
