Route Hearing Set
Spokane - (UPD - A hearing
on the Spokane-Calgary air
route case begins here July
28.
Western, Northwest, Pacific
and West Coast Airlines have
applied for the route. The
Civil Aeronautics Board will
decide which of the airlines
will take the flights.
,An April agreement reached
by Canada and the United
States permits both U. S. and
Canadian air lines to operate
between Calgary and Spo
kane.
Present connections by air
between the two cities are
through Great Falls, Mont
and Edmonton, Alta., or Se
attle and Vancouver, B.C.

New Club for Persons

I recently heard from the
Federation of the Handicap
ped (211 West 14th St., New
York 11, N.Y.) that a club
called Larberec-C e r e b r a 1
spelled backwards-was found
ed in 1953 to bring comfort
to many sufferers from cere
bral palsy. Activities of the
group include visits to thea
ters, restaurants and night
clubs. By going in a group
they feel they can the better
stand being stared at. They
also go each month to bowl
ing alleys and to baseball
games. They have an annual
luncheon. Their activities are
designed to help the members
to become accepted in society.
A few of the members have
already gotten married and
more are engaged. There are
free services to club mem
mers, such as medical ex
aminations, psychological test
ing, vocational counseling,
job-placement and summer
camping. I should think there
should be a Larberec Club in
every big city.
Ski-Injuries
I recently read in Scope
Weekly that at North Con
way, N.H. - a splendid ski
area-they have a little hos
pital in which they treat
some thousand skiers every
season. These people have suf
fered fractures, dislocations,
abrasions, sprains, and torn
ligaments. Every week ; end
the doctors and nurses have
to be on an emergency foot
ing. In the season of 1957 to
1958 they took care of 789
ski injuries, with 244 frac
tures and 189 dislocations.
Some 55 more persons re
quired orthopedic surgery. Dr.
Shedd, who has been work
ing at North Conway for the
past 49 years, says that ski
ing isn't so dangerous if you
are an expert, in good condi
tion, and if you take sensible
precautions. The worst thing
is for a novice to try to be a
hero and to race down one of
the most dangerous slopes.
Another bad thing is for a
person to ski when tired.
In a release by the World
Health Organization I find an
interesting set of questions
which will enable a person
to take his own mental
health pulse." These questions
were written down by Dr.
William C. Menninger, of the
Menninger Foundation, at To
peka, Kan.
Are you always worrying?
Are you continually unhap
py without justified cause?
Are you unable to concen
trate because of unrecognized
reasons? '
Do you lose your temper
easily and often?
Are you troubled by regu
lar insomnia?
Do you have wide fluctua
tions in your moods, from des
peration to elation,, and back
to depression which incapaci
tate you?
Do you continually dislike
to be with people?
Are you upset if the routine
of your life is disturbed?
Do your children consistent
ly "get on your nerves?"
Are you constantly bitter?
Are you afraid without
real cause?
Are you always right and
the other person always
wrong?
Do you have numerous
aches and pains for which no
doctor can find a physical
cause?
These are often signs of
poor mental health. If your
answer is 'yes' to a lot of
these questions, you are in
need of help.
Special Sedative
That is Needed
The other day an able phy
sician of 40 was in the of
fice telling me of the terri
bly distressing feeling in his
brain which was making con
sciousness so almost unbear
able that he would gladly
commit suicide if it weren't
that he must not desert his
children. What happened was
that last year his beautiful
and well-loved wife began to
go insane. She naturally ne
glected her home duties and
soon was treating the chil
dren with cruelty. Then the
man discovered that his wife
was being unfaithful with
other men. Naturally, because
he knew that with her psy
chosis, she was not respon
sible, he did what he could
to help her to straighten out
mentally, but, finally, for the
children's sake, he had to get
her out of the home, and get
a housekeeper to take care
of them. Then the wife sued
him for divorce. The judge
awarded him the children, but
in the process, stripped him
of all his savings, plus a good
deal. more.
With his world collapsing
about him, the unhappy doc
tor got a feeling of tension
in his head which, as he says,
is almost unbearable. Only
two things cause this distress
to let up a bit; one is seeing
one patient after another and
becoming absorbed in work;
the other is getting slightly
drunk on alcohol. The doctor
has tried many quieting
drugs, but, as he says, a seda
tive apparently is not what
he needs; what he needs is a
drug with a selective action
which will leave part of his
brain working well, while it
wipes out the misery in some
other part-perhaps the part
that has been terribly dis
tressed by the catastrophe
that has overwhelmed him.
If only he could stop think
ing of his great unhappiness,
or perhaps once and for all
decide how to settle all the
questions about it, he might
start life with a clean slate.
