Tallahassee, Fla.-The Rev. A- J. Reddick, past Florida
president of the NAACP, on the conviction -with a recommen
dation of mercy of four white youths for the rape of a Negro
coed:
"Florida has maintained its excellent record of not rear
ing from the precedent that no while man has erer been exe
cuted for the rape of a Negro. Had it been the other war
around, Negroes would hare been given the death penalty."
Washington-Gov. C. Mennen Williams of Michigan, con
ceding that New York Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller might be
more liberal than some Democratic hopefuls:
"If the Democrats should nominate Sen. Lyndon Johnson
(D-Tex.) for example, and the Republicans nominate Rocke
feller, where do you think the liberal Democrats will turn?
Whom could they vole for in all good conscience?"
La Jolla, Calif .-Gerald Lehrer, on the fatal shark attack
on his friend, Robert L. Pamperin, 50 yards off shore:
"He went under the water and I swam over. I looked
down int -j the water and saw him and the shark. There was

Mamaroneck, N.Y-Billy Casper, on winning the U.S.
Open golf championship:
"The worst thing was sitting in a window overlooking the
18th green watching first Mike Souchak and then Bob Rot
burg coming down the last hole needing a birdie to tie me.
It was a terrible wait and I sure regretted a bad chip shot I
made on the 17th that cost me a bogey five. If I'd Just got a
par there the wait would have been easy."
