Continuing TrendTo Heavy Bidding Noted at Auction
A continuing trend of heavy
bidding was noticable at an
oral auction timber sale Thurs
day at the Medford district
office of the bureau of land
management.
. The bureau offered and
sold nine tracts containing an
estimated 24,993,000 board
feet of timber for a total price
of $833,087.15. The tracts were
located throughout the Med
ford district in Jackson, Jose
phine, Klamath and Douglas
counties.
Bid prices for Douglas-fir,
which was the major species
on six tracts ranged from
$34.25 -per thousand board
feet board feet to $50 per
thousand. On the three tracts
' in which white fir was the
major species, the bid prices
were $12, $25 and $2rJ.25 per
thousand board feet.
Douglas County Tracts
The two tracts in Douglas
county -were purchased by
Caveman Lumber company of
Wolf Creek and Patterson
Lumber company of Glendale.
Caveman Lumber company
bid $51,696.90 for a tract of
1,111,000 board feet on Russell
creek near Azalea.. They com
peted with four other bidders
for the tract. --

Harold W. (Hal) Gardner,
chairman of the service divi
sion of the 1959 United Med
ford Crusade, has announced
completion of the appointment
of section heads for his di
vision. Serving as heads for the
UMC service division will be
Al Carpenter, assistant divi
sion chairman; Bill Luman,
amusements; Ed Barnett, com
munications; Floyd Hart, gen
eral insurance; Tom Teutsch,
life insurance; Douglas Pic
kelL real estate; Max Weston,
hotels and motels; Clifford
Proctor, transportation; Al
Bradford, barbers; Kern L.
Gibson, hairdressers; Larry
Schaecher, cafes; John Dumas,
laundries and dry - cleaners;
Richard Miller, finance; Floyd
Brownlee, taverns; and Oral
Freemyer, utilities.
The service division, one of
the largest in the UMC, is
responsible for more than $26,
000 in the 1959 fund-raising
campaign which begins Sept.
14. The section heads are now
recruiting solicitors. The ap
pointments will be announced
as they are completed.
According to - Campaign
Chairman Del Landing, chair
men have now been appointed
for all but one UMC division.
Gardner is the first to com
plete appointments to all sec
tion head posts. "' " -
The 31-year-old Gardner is
the youngest man to be given
the responsibility of chairman
ship' of a UMC division, ac
cording to Landing. ,
He was born in Bend, and
attended Willamette universi
ty. He has been employed by
the California Oregon Power
company for 10 years as a
special accountant, is a mem
ber of the Medford Elks club
and the Medford Junior Cham
ber of Commerce. He and his
wife, Genevieve, live at 3456
Hollywood ave., Medford.
According to Landing, it is
hoped that all workers for the
1959 UMC campaign will be
, organized by the end of June.
Patterson Lumber company
was the higher of two bidders
competing for a tract of 3,497,
000 board feet near Trappers
cabin. The high bid was $115,
297.30 for the tract.
Bate Lumber . company of
Merlin and A.'C. Smith Log
ging company of Wolf Creek
were successful bidders for the
two tracts in Josephine coun
ty. The tract purchased by
Bate Lumber company for
$66,922.15 contains 1,567,000
board feet near the headwa
ters of Jump Off Joe creek.
Grave Creek Sale
The 100,000 board feet pur
chased by..A. C. Smith Log
ging company for $4,620.60! is
located on upper Grave creek.
The four, tracts in Jackson
county were, purchased by
Loyd Silva of Grants -Pass,
Lithia Lumber company of
Ashland and Kogap Manufac
turing company of Medford.
Lithia Lumber company
purchased one tract containing
3,083,000 board feet on Sar
dine creek and a. second con
taining 4,437,000 board eet
near Pilot Rock. The high bids
were $98,481.45 and $155,223.
10 respectively for the tracts.
The bids for Douglas-fir' for
the two sales represented both
the lowest and the highest
bids of the sale. The Sardine
Creek sale brought $34.25 per
thousand board feet for Douglas-fir
and the Pilot Rock tract
brought $50 per thousand. The
Pilot Rock tract also repre
sented the highest bid for
white fir at $26.25 per thous
and. The tract purchased . by
Loyd Silva contains 6,130,000
board feet on the Butte Falls
Prospect rd. The purchase
price, which was the highest
offer of five bidders was $225,
816.80. Submits Only Bid '
Kogap Manufacturing com
pany submitted the only bid
for a tract of 3,756,000 board
feet in the Dead Indian area.
The bid was $75,013.55. This
was the only tract for which
there were no competing bids.
The Klamath county tract
consisted of 1,312,000 board
feet near Buck Lake. It was
purchased by Chiloquin Tim
ber company of Klamath Falls
for $40,015.30.
The last sale of the,, fiscal
year for the Medford district
of the bureau will be held at
the district office June 25 and
will' cnosist of 10 tracts con
taining 24,191,000 board feet
appraised at $613,121.20.
Eight of the tracts are located
in Jackson county and one
each in Josephine and Doug
las counties. Additional infor
