Test Operations
Start on System
Of Air Navigation
Test operations of the bear
ing and distance measuring
features of the Tactical Air
Navigation system (TACAN)
started near Medford last
week, the Federal Aviation
agency has announced. '
The TACAN is operated in
conjunction with the very
high frequency omnidirection
al radio range (VOR), and to
gether is known as VORTAC,
which has been designated as
the "common system" short
range navigation system to
meet civil and military re
quirement. The facility is located 10
miles north of Medford the
FFA said.
It was installed and will be
commissioned by the FAA as
part of the nation's air navi
gation system.
Enclosed in Cone
The facility is enclosed in
a 16-foot high plastic cone
mounted atop a 10-foot build
ing. From within the cone, the
VOR antenna emits static
free radio signals in all di
rections for guiding pilots.
The radio signals from the
grouna station radiate a pat
tern defining an infinite num
ber of courses that may be
flown as well as distance in
formation from the commojL
ground site. The signals from'
the grond station when re
ceived in the aircraft are con
verted into a reading in de
grees and mileage for the pi
lot. - O
The ground stations cover
about a 50-mile radius at the
lower altitudes around the
transmitter and greater dis
tances at the higher altitudes
such as those being used by
the new Jet airliners, the FAA
said. . Normally the stations
are placed about 100 miles
apart along th airways.

ing a drive-in restaurant was
shot and. killed by its pro
prietor early Friday after
striking the owner on the arm
with a hatchet, police re
ported. Deputy Coroner Ross Wood
ward identified the dead man
as Larry Eugene Riggs, 31,
Portland. Police said Riggs
has a previous record.
Phil Anderson, 37, told po
lice he and his wife, Jean,
were awakened by a loud
pounding about 3:30 a.m.
They live near their drive-in
cafe at 633 ,S.E. Powell blvd.
His wife looked across the
street and saw a man stick
his head out of one of the
restrooms and then close the
door.
Anderson said he got his
.38-caliber pistol, wjtnt over
and opened the door of the
rest room. He said the prowl
er lashed out with a hatchet
and struck him on the right
arm, then rushed past him
toward Powell blvd.
Anderson fired and the
man collapsed in the middle
of the boulevard. The bullet
entered the base of the spine
and police said it probably
ranged upward to the heart.
Anderson said he aimed low
and did not mean to kill him.
