Testing Cancer Drugs
Throughout the United
States, some 85 new chemi

cancer cells in
animals, are
being tested
on human pa

promise, it can next be test
ed in a few weeks on mice
with cancer, and then, if the
mouse tumor disappears, the
drug can be tested on men
and women. From Dr. Stuart
Sessoms, of The National In
stitute of Health, I learn that
this past year some 37,000
drugs were tested and some
were promising.
As I will keep saying in
this column, there is no sense
in a person's going to a cancer
quack and listening to his
wail that no one will test his
medicine. Of course, the Gov
ernment researchers will test
his medicine, unless their
chemists report that it is plain
tap water or a mild laxative.
For years, the quack cancer
remedy, probably most wide
ly sold, has been plain water!
The trouble with most people
with a supposed cancer cure
is that they don't want the
Government experts to test
it, or if it is tested and shown
to have no effect, they do

not care to accept this dic
tum. Pamphlets Up
Anyone who intends to test
a' drug on persons who have
cancer should know that
often, when the patient feels
very hopeful, his body for
a while will hold down the
growth of the cancer; the pain
will let up, and the patient
will be sure he is recovering.
I remember a patient of mine
whose abdomen was opened
in his home city. Because the
big cancer of his stomach
could not be removed, the
surgeon just closed the wound
and told the man that every
bit of the tumor had been
removed. The man was so
happy over this that he began
to eat voraciously and
promptly gamed 25 pounds,
but a few months later, he
collapsed and rapidly went
down hill. If, during his pe
riod of great improvement,
he had been taking some
drug, this would have ap
peared to everyone to have
been a remarkable treatment
for cancer.
The other day a nurse who,
for years, has been treating
cancer, sent me some before
treatment and after-treatment
pictures of a woman who had
let a cancer grow in her
breast until she had an ulcer
eight inches in diameter.
Later, under treatment, it
practically healed. As I told
the nurse, I could not get
excited over these pictures
wonderful as they were-be-cause
I remember a woman
who had a huge cancer like
that and had it almost heal
up with the help of only re
ligious faith. I have seen can
cers of the breast which, with
no treatment at all, stopped
growing and allowed the
woman to live on for many
years.

Hot Too Late to .
Get Polio Shots
Dr. A. Erin'Merkel, county
health officer, reminded resi
dents today that it is not too
late to receive Salk polio vac
cine for "pretty good protec
tion" this summer.
The doctor explained that
the first two shots of the
three shot series could still
be taken before the peak sea
son for polio is reached this
summer.
.-Dr. Merkel stressed that
many persons have not re
ceived any of tlje polio vac
cine or have not -received the
third shot in the series. He
added that this latter group
should get the final shot be
fore summer if it has been
more than seven months since
the second shot was received.
