score over Phil Holman in a
Kramer set. With Tibbutt lead
ing 6-2, Holman rallied to cut
the gap to 6-5.
The Joys in - the doubles
beat Howard Dugan and Gor
don Taylor also by 8-5.

tors turned but for the event
and the crowd stayed through
out the matches which were
preceded by demonstrations of
tennis strokes. Members of the

London - (UPD - A hero of
the Battle of Britain, former
RAF . Group Capt. A. G.
(Sailor) Malan, is in London
to receive treatment for Par
kinson's disease. Malan, who
had 32 enemy planes to his
credit, now runs a farm in
South Africa. ' '

total enrollment of only 200
boys and a travelling track
team of three, was the nation's
small college track 'champion
today and looked to still big
ger things-- the coming NCAA
big college meet.
Three of Winston-Salem's
speedsters came away with
seven places between them at
last week end's National As
sociation of Intercollegiate
Athletics (NCIA) meet, giv
ing Winston-Salem the small
college title by one point over
second-place East Texas State.
Triple Winner
Four of Winston-Salem's
three of them turned in by
champion hurdler Elias Gil
bert, who won the 220-yard
lows and the 120 and 440
yard highs,, thus becoming
the first triple-winner in the
NAIA meet's eight-year his
tory. East Texas managed to win
two firsts, one second, three
thirds, two fourths and a
sixth, but still could only
amass 55 points to Winston
Salem's 56. Kansas State
Teachers, Emporia, Kan.,
wound up third with 36 15
points, followed by Mogan
State, Baltimore, Md., with
33; Kearney, Neb., with 26,
and Humboldt State, Areata,
Calif., with 23 15.

By Fresno
Seattle SUPD The Fresno
State Bulldogs Saturday earn
ed the right to represent Dis
trict 8 in NCAA baseball
finals at Omaha, Neb., by
blasting Washington, 10-5, in
the final game of a three
game series here.
Earlier in the day Wash
ington had made the third
game necessary by nipping
the California team, 5-4.
Fresno State won the1 series
opener Friday night, 3-2.

Jim Puckett, Oregon fresh
man, won the 100 and the 220
yard dashes Saturday in the
Washington State Invitation
al Track and Field meet here.
His times were 9.8 in the 100
and 21.5 in the 220.
Steve Anderson of Oregon
won the broad jump with 22
feet 10 inches and Dave Ed
strom of Oregon was second
to Spike Arlt of Washington
State in the high hurdles.

opening its American Legion
junior baseball season, swept
a two-game weeKend series
from the Central P.o i n t
Chenev Studs. A counter in
the top of the seventh inning

was in sharp contrast to the
19 to 10 at Cheney field on
Saturday night.
Two hits and the lone mis
cue charged to the Studs
figured in the single run yes
terday afternoon. Chuck
Hiney safetied but was forced
out on Marv French's infield
ground ball which Cheney
pitcher Bill Anhorn fielded
and tossed to second base.
French then raced out to steal.
Stud catcher Ed Allen made a
fine throw in time but sec
ond baseman Brad Gettling
was unable .to hang on to the
horsehide as the runner slid
in and French was safe. Les
Bogner then hit to drive in
his teammate.
In the Saturday scuffle
Lockwood accumulated five
runs in the first inning, three
in the second and five more
in the third for a 13 to 0 gap.
Central Point cut the margin
to 13 to 8 with two markers
in the fourth frame and six in
the sixth. But Roseburg gain
ed another six in the seventh
while the Studs could muster
just two more.
Grants Pass Wednesday
The week end games were
non-district affairs. Central
Point begins district action on
Wednesday as host xo Grants
Pass Mock Motors. Game time
at Cheney field will be 8 pjn.
Yesterday, Lockwood held
down the Studs with the com
bined . three-hit twirling of
Jerry Halladay and Bob
Livingston while Bill Anhorn
chucked a creditable seven
hitter for the home team.
Halladay pitched two hit ball
over four innings, striking out
five and walking just one be
fore Bogner took over his bat
ting spot to add offensive
punch for the Roseburg' nine.
Livingston gave up one hit
and fanned four batters.
Anhorn registered six
strikeouts and issued just one
base on balls. ' .
Bogner hit two for two and
Jim Booth two for three yes
terday, the only men with
more than one hit in tne
game. Booth was the week end
batting fcstar. He had two
singles and a triple in four
times up yesterday and sock
ed one sacrifice flyout.
Bill Anhorn Doubles
Cheney had runners as far
as second base in four separ
ate innings yesterday. Longest
blast of the afternoon was An
horn's fly to deep center field
over the head of Bob Scott for
a two-bagger. Roseburg on
Sunday, in addition to its
score, had runners three times
as far as third base. Two got
that far with the help of
balks in the fourth canto and
one, Booth, was caught in a
rundown between third and
home. Another runner got to
third in the fifth on two hits
Roseburg had 12 hits Sat
urday and the help of 13 bases
on balls off three central
Point Ditchersl There were six
errors on each side. Bob Whip
ple went the distance pitching
for Lockwood. He gave up
just four -hits but yielded 10
walks. Roseburg slapped live
hits in its first Inning spree
but just one in the second

Shrine Golf tournament here
was won Sunday, by Lee
Gustafson, football and golf
coach at South Salem High
school, with a 34-33-67, which
was five under par.
Gustafson carded one bogie
and six birdies. It was the first
time he has competed in the
tourney.
Ellsworth Jones of Colwood
was second with 35-33-68 and
next came Gary Campbell of
Salem with a total of 70 and
Eugene's Gordon Malatt with
71.

man of the Oregon UPI Edi
tors association at its annual
meeting Saturday.
Gerald McFarland, news
editor of the Salem Capital
Journal, was named vice
chairman.
Weeks, former vice chair
man, succeeds Harry Chip
man, telegraph editor of the
Medford Mail Tribune and a
co-founder of the group.
The group is composed of
editors handling wire copy
on the UPI's 14 client news
papers in Oregon.

ling to themselves today in
theh Pacific Coast league and
there was no telling when
theh voltage might let up.
Thirty-five hurlers were
used in seven games Sunday
although two pitchers did
manage to go the distance.
This durable duo consisted of
Portland's Howie Reed, who
rode to a 13-7 win over Phoe
nix . and Vancouver's Bud
Watkins who hurled the
Mounties to a 5-1 triumph
against Sacramento.
