POWER OF ADVERTISING This billboard outside Kankakee, DL, exercised such
drawing power that even the horses in the field felt impelled to sample the product
or what they thought was the product. Whether it was buttermilk, the paper or
the paste, the horses thought it was just great and ate all of the sign they could
reach. .

Hovering Plane
Completes Test
! Edwards AFB, Calif.- OJPD -
The Doak 16, a new plane ca
pable of hovering, going
straight up or -flying like a
conventional craft, has com
pleted successfully its first
flight test,, the Army an
nounced today.
The craft, designated the
CZ4DA by the Army, was
halted as more adaptable than
the helicopter, because of its
unique barrel - shaped power
plants located on the tips of
its wings. The power plants,
which look like large encased
fans, can swivel into positions
which make the craft act like
a conventional plane or
helicopter.
TheijAnny said the Doak 16
was designed for longer
ranges and higher speeds than
helicopters and would be
used as a liaison plane. It was
built by Doak Aircraft, Tor
rance, Calif. .

Whooping Cranes Are On
The Brink Of Extinction
The whooping crane occu
pies an uneviable position in
tha world of living creatures.
These great, white, beautiful
birds are precariously balan

Small Worlds
Around Us
By Lynn M. Watkins
the airways on their 2,000
mile migration to their nat
ural nesting sites, poses many
dangers, for every mile of the
long journey is hazardous.
Saskatchewan Goal
Across the entire breadth
of Texas and Oklahoma, into
Kansas, over Nebraska
through South and North Da
kota, the big birds wil fly en
route to the summer nesting
grounds in the northern sec
tion of Saskatchewan. , In
wild, isolated and virtually
unknown sections of the far
Northwest, the whooping
cranes will attempt to raise
their families, an average
over the past 10 years of
about four young a year, for
the entire colony.
The birrk seem compara
tively safe thTe in those un
inhabited regions, but the
dangerous time will again ap
proach in the fall when once
again the urge to migrate
takes possession of them, and
they start the 2,000 mile jour
ney, back to southern Texas.
Thus migration coincides
with the opening of the wild
fowl season, when the
swamps, rivers, swales and
lakes are over-populated with
hunters, some of whom have
no respect for game laws, or
for birds on the outer edge of
extinction. Being particularly
conspicuous because of their
size, and startling white in
color, as well as their deep,
trumpet-like voice that can
be hard for great distances,
they attract much attention
to themselves. While in flight
they are high in the air but
when coming to earth to rest,
or feed, they become attrac
tive targets.
Been Shot -
Every year, since their es
tablished migratory route has
been under the scrutiny of in
terested observers, one or
hnore of the cranes has been
shot somewhere en route. The
whooping crane stands about
4!4 feet in height? with a wing
spread of seven feet. The
body feathers are white, the
head is red; the wings are tip
ped with black at the tips.
The voice is trumpet-like,
which gives the name
"whooping" to the bird.
There are about two dozen of
these birds left alive in all
the world.
It is doubtful if these grace
ful birds can long survive..
There are too many factors
against their continuance; a
sudden storm, a disease, or
the persistence of illegal
shooting could reduce their
numbers to the vanishing
point.

and Tribune Syndicate, 1959)
