these creatures, neither bug,

cared people half to death
ever since curious folks have

tree-stumps or moved a board
In a neglected back-yard.
The millipede has aeen
called a "thousand legged
worm."- Regardless of how
leggy the millipede looks it
falls far short of having a
thousand legs. It is "way
hort", the creature lacks
about 836.
The millipede's body is as
flexible as a rubber band. It
can move in and out of crev
ice with exactly the ease
with which a stream of water
flpws over a gravel bed. The
body is composed of 82 body
segments. Each body segment
is a distinct section and each
section is equipped with two
pairs of jointed legs; 164 legs
in all. Looked at closely under
a strong glass, the millipede's
legs have both knees and el

or dark brown in color.
With the multiple extrem
ities they possess it would be
natural to suppose the mille
pedes would be lightning fast
on their feet but actually they
are relatively slow. Too many
legs seem to be a slight handi
cap. The creature can't seem
to get them all going fast
enough to carry itself with
any great speed.
Perhaps the illusion of
speed, described by those
scared folks who accasionally
see a millipede, comes about
at the sight of so many legs
all working in unison,, giving
the creature the appearance of
speed. The cousin of the milli
pede, the centipede, outmoves
the first by several jerks.
Mo Poison
Although the millipede
looks vicious, they are harm
less and possess no poison or
gans. Unlike the centipede,
who has less legs and whose
name means "hundred-legged,"
the millipede is just
frightening , without being
dangerous.
The centipede has the front
pair of its legs connected to
organs that contain venom.
However, these do not pose
any danger to humans.
Although called worms, in
sects, bugs and many . other
things, the millipedes belong
to a class of animals known as
anthropods. They feed on de
cayed vegetable matter and
prefer to spend their uninter
esting lives just where you
would expect to find such mis
fits, under a stone rolled up
in a tight little ball with all
their J 60 legs wrapped about
their squirmy selves.

Lewisfon Office

of the Medford Social Secur
ity office since October, 1954,
has been transferred to the
Lewiston, Idaho, office as
manager. The transfer is ef
fective June 15.
He will be succeeded here
by Ed Jacobson, assistant
manager of the Santa Ana,
Calif., office, who is to re
port to Medford in the near
future.
Nusbaum said the Lewiston
office administers the old age
and survivors insurance pro
gram in five counties in Ida
ho and two counties in Wash
ington. Nusbaum was manager at
Eureka, Calif., before moving
to Medford.
