written a fine article on acne.
He says that since there are
several causes
for acne there
must be sev
eral types of
treatment. Be
cause of this,
w h e n people
write asking
me how to
treat their ac
ne, I can't give
DrTAlvarez any simple
answer. As Dr. Rattner says,
the physician tries to lessen
the activity of the grease-making
glands in the skin, per
haps by applying some form
of radiation and by modify-,
ing the diet.
He will try to combat in
fection of these glands, per
haps with a small daily dose
of some antibiotic drug. Be
cause there is a relation be
tween acne and the glands
of internal secretion, it helps
in some cases to use estro
genic (ovarian) substances
and perhaps steroids of the
cortisone type. Some skin spe
cialists. : will no i longer use
x-rays because of the possi
bility of doing harm, but some
still use them. Other men
use ultra-violet rays. Most
skin specialists advise the
youngsters against eating too
much and especially against
eating foods such as chocolate
to which they may happen to'
be allergic. ,
The youngster should keep
a record of unusual foods eat
en the day before his . acne
flares up. Some doctors give
toxoids, vaccines; vitamins,
ointments and psychotherapy.
Some' give psychotherapy to
help the youngster who gets
to feeling very unhappy and
sexually inferior because of
the condition of the face. After
the disease has quit, perhaps
around the age of 22, if the
skin is badly pitted, it can
be planed flat again.
Some skin specialists ad
vise that the patient wash his
face twice a day with soap.:
This will tend to open up the
mouths of the fat-producing
glands. Some advise that a
comedone extractor be bought
at a drugstore. With this,
someone in the home ,should
squeeze out black heads as
soon as they form, thus cutting
down on the number of in
fected pimples on the face.
A Vaccine Against Measles
Drs. John M. Adams, David
T. Imagawa, Stanley W.
Wright and George Tarjan,
from the University of Cali
fornia, Los Angeles, Medical
School recently announced
that they have a vaccine
against measles which they
have tested on several hun
dred patients in a state hos
pital. Three years after these
people were vaccinated, an
epidemic of measles came
along which attacked , more
than 10 per cent of the patient
population.
In this epidemic only a
third as many of the vac
cinated persons came down

member of its National Execu
tive Board since 1948.
Special sessions were held
Thursday afternoon for coun
cil presidents and explorer
chairmen, which were attend
ed by McDougall and Smith.
The group will return to
Medford Saturday evening
after attending the final ses
sion. The 1962 annual meeting
of the National Council will
be held in Portland.

Alaska's Booth
Has Two Sections
Portland - Alaska's $25,000
exhibition booth at the Cen
tennial Exhibition will be
divided into two sections, ac
cording to Jules Radinsky,
personal representative of
Gov. William Egan.
Radinsky, here to super
vise the exhibit, says that one
part of the displays will be
devqted to the old traditional
Alaska featuring such sym
bolic exhibits as stuffed polar
bears, Kodiak bears and the
world's largest moose,
measuring seven feet from the
ground to the shoulders.
These, he says, are representa
tive of his state'i "smaller
animals."
Eskimo Ivory carvers will
be shown at work as well as
totem pole carvers and an
eskimo from Alaska's Moun
tain of Jade will do jade
carving. An Aleut woman will
demonstrate Attu basket
weaving, a dying art. This
woman is believed to be the
last in the world who knows
how to do this type of weav
ing, so fine that it will hold
water.
Second section of the ex
hibit will portray the new
Alaska with an artists's con
ception of a pulp mill at
Ketchican, a scale model
power display and other
symbols of Alaska's indus
trial future. Shown in the In
ternational Theater at the Ex
position will be pictorial
travelogues and the first and
only picture of the Russian
fishing fleet off the coast of
Alaska.
Staffing the booth during
the 100 days of the Exposi
tion will be two Eskimo
girls, two Aleut girls and .a
Chilkat Indian, all thoroughly
versed in Alaska's lore and
eager to answer questions
about one of the country's
two newest states."
