Qualified Graduates Will Have No Trouble Finding Good Jobs
Corvallis - Qualified 1959
college graduates will find no
trouble in securing a job with
business on a slight upsurge
after the recession scare a
year ago, Oregon State college
placement officials have re
ported. , "
Average starting pay for
the 1959 graduates varies
from $4,000 to $6,000 a year
with the low in home eco
nomics and education and the
high in physics, engineering,
and mathematics.
Agriculture: Even with the
number of farmers decreas
ing, the number of people
working in agriculture is
steadily increasing. Demand
for the agriculture graduate
will exceed supply by about
2 to 1. Graduates are needed
in sales, processing and re
search.
Business and Technology:
Hiring quotas for business ad
ministration graduates are up
over last year. Sales and ac
count ing opportunities are
up over last year. Sales and
accounting opportunities are
most numerous. Starting sal
aries in accounting are $375
to $400.. Sales jobs in larger
concerns bring $400 to S425.
Banking and merchandising
firms are offering about $375.
Education: Starting pay for
OSC education graduates this
year will vary from $4,000 to
$5,650. Shortage fields are
girls physical education, ele
mentary education taught by
young men, women English
teachers, industrial arts (metal
and auto mechanics) and spec
ial education for teaching
mentally retarded and handi
capped children. Need great
est for high school librarians.
Engineering: Demand for
engineers is up from last
year's "depression scare."
Shortage areas are electrical
engineers for the air Industry
manufacturing jets and mis
siles and mechanical and civil
engineers for U. S. road build
ing program.
Data processing has brought
a shortage for electrical engi
neers and mathematics ma
jors. Chemical engineers in
biggest demand the past sev
eral years have dropped to
the bottom because the "oil
industry is hurting." Geolo
gists have also felt the oil
industry cutback.
Forestry: All June forestry
graduates have been placed
with beginning pay between
$4,500 to $5,000. Greatest
shortage is in forest engineer
ing and forest products.
Home Economics: The mar
ket for home economics grad
uates is always kept open be
cause 70 per cent of the Ore
gon home economics teachers
are married. The home ec
women usually stop teaching
after a few years to get mar
ried and raise a family.
Home economics teaching
jobs pay from $4,000 to
$5,2000. Businesses take stu
dents with experience in ex
tension or teaching.
Shortage in the home eco
nomics field is greatest in
college teaching, especially in
household life and foods and
nutrition. For a masters and
doctorate graduate, pay can be
$4,200 to $6,000. Interesting
jobs open on magazines.
Pharmacy: In pharmacy, de
mand far exceeds supply. Jobs
as medical service representa
tives are going unanswered.
A few graduates have not ac
cepted employment because
they are looking for better
offers. Lowest acceptance has
been $400 a month, highest
$675, with the average $485.
Science: Demand for chem
istry graduates "appears to be
better than normal." Bache
lors degree graduates get from
$425 to $475 a month; masters
$525 to $575.
Entomology, botany, phys
ics, and chemistry graduates
with a doctorate degree re
ceive pay varying from $6,000
to $9,000 depending on exper
ience and ability. Emphasis is
on well trained people.
Fast - growing student en
rollments and drawing off of
teaching staff into research
appointments have doubled re
quests for zoology graduates
with doctors degrees. Starting
salaries for college professors
is between $5,000 to $6,500.
Physics graduates have no
trouble in finding an excel
lent job. Pay for the bachelor
graduate ranges from $485 to

$525 a month. Pay , for the

juvenile- Hall Planned
By BERTHA WILSON
Yreka-Siskiyou county res
idents should know by July 1
whether the $50,000 budgeted
by county supervisors for a
juvenile hall can do the job,
County Probation Officer Jess
Brewer said.
Brewer requested $125,000
for the hall. The board allow
ed the lesser amount with the
understanding that the hall
be constructed adjacent to the
Siskiyou County General hos
pital to allow use of the hos
pital ktichen. The 'grand jury
has urged that the hall be
built immediately.
Brewer said the minimal
hall as now planned will in
clude four, security cells, a
boys' and girls' dormitory,
living quarters for supervis
ory personnel, space for a fu
ture kitchen, and office space
In case the probation office
should be transferred there.
A special room for small chil
dren will be provided adja
cent to the supervisory per
sonnel room, Brewer said.
No recreation or outdoor
playground is planned for the
hall for some time yet, Brew
er said, unless local service
clubs can be encouraged to
donate equipment and work.
Equipment for the dormito
ries will be purchased from
U. S. government surplus
whenever possible, he said.
International Paper com
pany outbid 10 competing
firms by paying $253,475 for
7V4 million board feet of tim
ber about five miles west of
Oak Knoll in the Yreka work
ing circle of Klamath nation
al forest, Auction Officer
John Murry has reported.
The company paid almost
2V2 times the $88,620 adver
tised value placed on the tim-,
ber.
Yreka High school's Future
Farmers of America chapter
has elected Stan Sears as pres
ident. He succeeds Don Sta
dler. Other officers are vice pres
ident, Curt Harding; secre
tary, Rollie Elsea; treasurer,
Bruce Root; reporter, Don
Kreutzer; sentinel, Bob Jen
nings, and historian, Jerry
Wreden.
Siskiyou Bowling alleys,
the 12-lane recreation center
built by Harry B. Millette ad
jacent the Yreka Drive-in the
ater, opened Thursday.
A grand opening, at which
some of the nation's top bowl
ers are expected to demon
strate their skill, will be held
June 6.
The Siskiyou Union High
school board appointed John
Hincs. returning after a one
year Jeave of absence last
year, as vice principal of
Butte Valley High school.
Margery Harrison and Sylvia
Herrera are new teachers at
Yreka High school.
Resignations were accepted
from Gene Berry, Ft. Jones;
Joe DeLuca, Weed, and E.
Charles Heinitz, Yreka.

ing the quills erect. At the
same time the short, stubby
tail lashes back and forth,
driving the quills into any
thing foolish enough to be
close.
' Many of the larger quills
may measure five inches in
length, each armed with tiny,
recurving barbs that make the
extraction of the quills very
difficult. Once imbedded in
living flesh the muscular
movements work the quill
deeper and deeper.
The myth that the animal
"can throw his quills" is one
of the oldest. Of course he
can't but the legend persists.
Among many, too, is the be
lief that this animal is very
stupid. Perhaps he only acts
dumb to confound his ene
mies and perplex his friends.
Behind his unhurried actions
his little mind may be ponder
ing those puzzling problems
that most certainly bother all
porcupines.
; (Released by The Register
and Tribune Syndicate, 1959)
Plodding Porcupine Chews
Anything Even Oars
It was a "lazy river;" a lazy
summer day and I fitted into
It perfectly.
I had alternately rowed and
floated for the past three
hours. Now the heat and the
constant drone of hundreds of
summer insects invited me to
pull to the near shore and
take a nap. I tied the boat to
a stream-side tree and pillow
ing my head on my knapsack
dropped off to sleep.
How long I slept I never
knew but I was awakened by
a steady gnawing sound. A
sound that vibrated slightly
on the gunwale of the boat, I
opened my eyes. There not
three feet from me, was a
large porcupine. He was calm
ly eating the handles of the
boat-oars. At my sudden start
he turned his head and
blinked his eyes. He was
willing to chew up the han
dles to get what little salt my
perspiration-soaked hands had
left on the oars:
No Concern
He showed no concern
when I carefully inched away
to a safer distance. He looked
at me very sadly when I later
pulled the oar away from him
but he showed no hostility.
Fear of man or anything else
is about as alien to a porcu
pine as ambition or strenuous
activity.
By nature he is a plodder.
He never hurries. Many peo
ple who know him say he
never thinks.
About the only thing he
asks of life is something, any
thing, to chew on. In his
blundering way he can be the
most aggravating of creatures
and at the same time the most
destructive.
I am always amazed at the
great number of quills with
which a healthy porcupine is
armed. The quills seem about
as numerous as the "hair on a
dog," numbering several thou
sand. They lie flat on" the ani- J ,.
mal's body mixed in with the"! Chimneys 4 Furnaces
silvery, stiff hair.
