The Medical
Recent Achievements in
Cancer Research
Dr. John J. Harris, of the
Sloan Kettering Institute of
New York City, just reported
his ability to
grow human
cancer cells in
eggs, and to
use such cul
tures for the

growth of cancer.
Another very promising
method for quickly testing
drugs for anti-cancer activity
has just been developed by
Irving Toplin, of the John L.
Smith Memorial for Cancer
Research, of Maywood, N. J.
He grows human cancer cells
in a solution containing hu
man blood serum. This is held
in tiny plastic cups which are
transparent so that the mater
ial in them can be examined
with a microscope. After from
three to five days of incuba
tion of the material, one can
compare its destructive power
with that of other drugs al
ready available.
Very encouraging is the fact
that Toplin has found that the
results of this simple and
speedy " technic for testing
drugs , agree closely with the
results obtained by testing the
same drugs on cancer-bearing
animals.
Every year people write to
scold me because I am not

the business of some cancer

Roundup
Emeritus Consultant In Medicine,
Mr.yo Clinic
Emeritus Professor of Medicine,
Mayo Clint
that the medical profession
buy from him his supposedly
secret remedy. Usually my
correspondents quote the
quack's complaint that no one
will test his remedy. This can
not be true because today the
great U. S. Government Can
cer Research Center at Beth
esda will quickly test any
drug that shows any promise
as a cure for cancer. Every
year they are testing such
drugs by the thousand. An
important point is that no
longer does a drug have to
be tested on cancers in man
and women, and no longer do
we have to wait from three
to five years for a report. As
I said above, we can get a
report now in a matter of
days if the test is made on
cultured cancer cells, or a mat
ter of weeks if the test is
jmade on cancerous mice,
j The Government chemists
also examine all quack cures
for cancer, and quickly tell
us what is in them. The one
that has been sold very wide
ly for years was found to be
plain tap water! The last I
heard, the man who, for
years, sold it for large sums
is now living in a foreign
country where he fled to
escape U. S. authorities who
wanted to prosecute him for
obtaining much money under
false pretenses.
